Up to Something Fishy

Benjamin Kornegay of Camden is making good use of his summer vacation.  He is putting the information he has learned in his biology classes to work as he interns Ben Kwith the North Carolina Aquarium located on Roanoke Island.

Kornegay, sophomore biology major at Mount Olive College, is the son of Pete and Rose Kornegay.

When asked how he felt this internship would help him in the future, he commented "The internship provides me with valuable job experience for my career, in which I will research marine life for the government."

During the internship, Kornegay cleans exhibits, feeds animals, and collects fish from the wild to put into the tanks.

"Dr. Gall, my professor, has been great at opening up doors for me," Kornegay said.  "He has pushed me to achieve my goals."

The School of Arts and Sciences at Mount Olive College provides experiential learning to students both in the classroom and in communities, transforming the student's college experience and the people's lives they touch.

Emphasis is placed on excellence in learning and preparing students to be successful in their transition to employment, or for graduate school, and to inspire them in a quest for learning as a lifelong process.

"Ben's internship at the NC aquarium and participation in Bahamas Field Course on Coral Reef Ecology are prime examples of his commitment to this field of study," stated Dr. Dan Gall, Environmental Science coordinator and professor of geology and archaeology at MOC.

"Ben is an outstanding student who is focused on a goal that will certainly prepare him to make important contributions to maintaining wild fish stocks from which North Carolina's sport and commercial fishing folk will benefit."
