New President Appointed to Mount Olive College
Dr. Philip Paul Kerstetter, president and chief executive officer of Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina Kansas, has been selected as the fourth president of Mount Olive College by the College's Board of Trustees. Darrell Horne, chair of the MOC Board of Trustees, announced the appointment today in a release to students, faculty and staff.
Dr. Kerstetter, 61, will take office on July 1, 2009 and succeeds Dr. J. William Byrd, who previously announced that he would be stepping down after 14 years as president of the College. "Phil Kerstetter embodies the ideals of learning, innovation and service that are at the heart of Mount Olive College's mission," Horne said. "We are fortunate to attract someone of Phil's experience, accomplishment and vision to our team. He has an exemplary record not only in fund raising, but in working well with board and other constituencies. As someone who possesses keen insight into the special qualities of the liberal arts college experience, Phil promises to be an outstanding spokesperson for Mount Olive College." Dr. Kerstetter's selection by the College's Board of Trustees is the result of an extensive and rigorous, nation-wide search that has taken more than a year. Dr. Kerstetter received his B.A. in religion from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania; his M.Ed. in college counseling from the University of Delaware, and his Ph.D. in special education administration from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. His 35years of higher education experience in both the public and private sector encompasses a wide range of increasingly responsible roles in all segments of university governance including: student affairs, academic and curriculum development, initiating and completing major advancement goals, designing and implementing fiscal strategies, and his current role as president of Kansas Wesleyan University. In addition to his formal appointments, Dr. Kerstetter has served on numerous state and national committees. He is a recognized authority on assessment and strategic planning. He has authored grants and has published in professional journals. Dr. Kerstetter is active in the Salina community. He is a member of the University United Methodist Church and currently serves on several local advisory groups, including the Board of Directors of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, the Salina Area United Way, and the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Associated Colleges of Central Kansas, and serves as vice president of the Kansas Independent College Funding Authority. In addition, Dr. Kerstetter chairs the Board of Presidents for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and serves as a member of the Council of Presidents of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He previously served as a member of the Board of Trustees at Thiel College, including service as the head of the Board's Instruction Committee and member of the Board's Executive Committee. He was a member and the past chair of the Board of Directors of the State YMCA of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kerstetter is married to Mary Johnson Kerstetter. They have two children, David William Kerstetter and Joanne Kerstetter Rooney. David is a research scientist and adjunct faculty member at Nova Southeastern University; he and his wife have a daughter and reside in Florida. Jodie is the academic events coordinator for California University of Pennsylvania. Jodie and her husband have two sons and reside in Pennsylvania. Regarding his appointment Dr. Kerstetter said, "I am honored and humbled to accept this role. Mount Olive College is a unique and special place with a powerful sense of community. The educational opportunities it offers, both for traditional and nontraditional students, are exceptional, and the loyalty and passion of its alumni, faculty, staff and students are unrivaled. I could not be more excited about this opportunity to help build on Mount Olive College's great traditions as well as its firmly grounded position in higher education." Mount Olive College, the second fastest growing private college in North Carolina, offers associate and bachelor degree programs at each of its seven locations in Mount Olive, Goldsboro, Jacksonville, New Bern, Wilmington, Washington and the Research Triangle Park. As the fifth largest private college in the state, MOC serves a highly diverse student body comprised of more than 4,700 traditional and nontraditional students.
