Dear Families-
Welcome to the first Monday Bulletin in about 25 years. When the Center School was first established, the week used to start with a Monday Bulletin. We can only imagine how the school must have been filled with the rich aroma of purple mimeographing ink at the start of every week. Soon, through mild forms of entropy, the Monday Bulletin became the Tuesday Bulletin which morphed into the Wednesday Bulletin and resulted in the Thursday Bulletin. We've taken the Bulletin by the horns and restored things to their proper order. Our hope with this change is that you will be able to focus on the week ahead.
And, speaking of hope, today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day. We hope you will have a chance to talk with your children, even for just a few minutes, about why this man was given a national day off. This holiday was initiated by the labor movement and introduced to congress by a democratic US Representive from Michigan in 1979. It failed to pass the House, in part, because a holiday to celebrate a private citizen was unprecidented. However, the King Center, Stevie Wonder, a peace conference and a petition containing six million signatures finally impressed upon the powers-that-be that this precident was worth challenging. President Ronald Reagan signed it into law in 1983. As Margaret Meade so beautifully said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." (Okay, six million is not exactly small, but it was still the people who ultimately made it possible.)
Tomorrow is the inaguration of Barack Obama to become the 44th president of the United States. He and Joe Biden recieved more than 69 million votes. Again, the people spoke and a long-standing precident was changed. Yippeee! To celebrate this momentus occasion, our whole school will attempt to gather to watch the swearing-in ceremony, which is slated to happen around lunch time. Please send your child with a NON-MICROWAVABLE lunch tomorrow! Thanks.
On Friday, 8th grader Kellie and a cadre of Uppers will host an afterschool fair to raise money for the Heifer Project. If you are able to stay after with your child and participate, that would be lovely. Kellie promises all manner of diversion from ring toss to cake walk to face painting to duck pond and much more. The fair is from 3-5:30.
Next Monday is our second ski/snowboard/skate day!
Thanks for all your care and energy.

Baby Baby!
We would like to welcome to the Center School community Rosa Katherine Sanborn, class of 2023. She joins brother Eliot (Class of '21). Rosa, Eliot, Chris and Anna are resting, playing and sleeping in tiny increments this winter. Chris Sanborn will rejoin his class, Mid-Ums North, shortly after February break. We cannot wait to coo and schnoodle Rosa!
In other baby news we are happy to announce that Uppers teacher, Erin Maclaughin is expecting a baby in May! Erin is graciously accepting (girl) names. |
All School
Mid-Ums South is running All School for the next few weeks. This week's theme isXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Our song-leading musicians are few and far between right now with Chris Sanborn on paternity leave and Beth Watrous off on Fridays. Barbara Lockheart is fabulously holding down the ship but sure could use some musical companionship at All School. If you play guitar well, are musically flexible, are a facile learner and happen to be free on Friday mornings, please, please just sling your instrument in the back seat and join us for All School for the next few weeks! Thanks. |

Message
We have two vitally important events coming up. In just two short weeks we are having another Admisisons Open House on Sunday, February 1st. This one will feature Birds of Prey. Tom Ricardi, raptor rehabilitator, will bring his exquisit birds to us and give an informative talk from 1-2. It will be followed by ornithology workshops and craft in classrooms from 2-4. We invite you and your family to come to this event. It is inexpressively powerful to experience Tom's birds up close. The workshops promise good fun and fascinating learning--from owl pellet dissections to mask making! Bring a friend with Center School age kids.
And then on Friday, February 6th, from 6-8pm, 4th-6th grade parents are invited to a special Uppers Information night at the Katie Robbins and Peter Garbus house. All the Uppers teachers will be on hand to talk about the program. In addition, current and past Uppers and parents will speak about their experiences in the program. We would like you to mark your calenendars now and start working on childcare because this is an adult event.
