Clothing and Textiles Diversion
The Council for Textile Recycling has launched a website called weardonaterecycle.org to educate consumers on the importance of recycling all clothing and textiles, not just those that are gently worn and to highlight how 95 percent of clothing and textiles are recyclable.
"Our goal is to have zero post-consumer textile waste going into landfills by 2037," said Eric Stubin, CTR chairman of the board, in a prepared statement. "In the U.S., the average person discards 70 pounds of their old clothing, shoes and household textiles in their local landfill each year. We're educating people that clothing and textiles are among the most recyclable items in their home."
USAgain, a global textile reuse and recycling company, is headquartered in Illinois. The company provides outdoor collection bins for gently-used clothes and shoes at schools, churches, community locations and businesses. Most donations are used as secondhand clothing. The remainder is recycled as polishing cloths or converted into fiber to be remade into recycled textile products.
Additionally, there is even an opportunity for schools to raise funds through their collection efforts. The Greenraiser is an education-based recycling program that helps students raise funds for school projects while providing them with a platform to spread environmental awareness to others within their community. The program is designed so that participation requires no cost, no work and no liability to the school, students and parents. For more information, visit usagain.com/schoolfundraisers.
