In order to develop an effective and targeted waste reduction program, the current waste stream needs to be evaluated. Throwing away a single bottle or banana peel does not seem very important until we see the cumulative impact of everyone's combined trash over a period of time. A waste audit or assessment provides a baseline against which to review waste reduction options and measure program performance.
SWANCC encourages schools to take the "No Trash Week" challenge. If you are not willing to do it for an entire week, the activity can be modified for one day. |
