This is the 12th year that SWANCC has agreed to be a collection partner for Nike's
Reuse-a-Shoe (RAS) program. Normally, old sneakers are thrown away in the garbage and end up in a landfill. Through the RAS program, old athletic shoes collected by SWANCC will be shredded at Nike's Tennessee facility and made into
Regrind, a material that goes into making new sports surfaces and fields, such as basketball and tennis courts, soccer and football fields and running tracks.
Since 1999, SWANCC has recovered over 82,000 pairs of athletic shoes for Nike's recycling program, and donated thousands more to charity. This year, SWANCC will partner with Share Your Soles, a non-profit organization located in Alsip, IL, who donates gently-used shoes to poor individuals worldwide.
Who Can Participate? SWANCC Collection Partners need to represent a school, community group, park district, library, municipality or business in a member community - see list on right. Each SWANCC Collection Partner (the person coordinating the project) must fax or mail an Agreement to SWANCC - one each year. Upon receiving the Agreement, a packet with collection bags, promotional posters and additional details will be mailed to the coordinator.
