Ocean Publishing entered just two of its books into the 2011 President's Book Awards conducted annually by the Florida Publishers Association (FPA). Both books won awards. The gold medal for Cover Design went to Explore the Southeast National Marine Sanctuary with Jean-Michel Cousteau and the silver medal in Florida Non-Fiction for Adults went to their title Tracks in the Sand: Sea Turtles and Their Protectors. Dane Batty of Niche Publishing Co. has been offered a film rights deal by a Hollywood producer for his title Wanted: Gentleman Bank Robber. The script is to be completed in the next month by screenwriter Peter Himmelstein. The deal surprisingly resulted from a negative PW review. When You Need a Timeout: The Busy Girl's Guide to Real Stress Relief - by author Barbara Mitchell DCH has received an award for its Kindle version from the Global eBook Awards. Founded by Dan Poynter, the inaugural Global eBook Awards recognizes and gives visibility to ebook authors.
MaryAnn Kohl, of Bright Ring Publishing let us know that since mid-Sept., her titles have been featured in Barnes and Noble bookstores nationwide as part of the "Parents Expert Circle". The Parents Expert Circle Corner is a fixed area of all stores. MaryAnn is one of the 16 BN.com parenting experts who writes monthly articles for the BN.com website. Patriot Press author Jessica James (Noble Cause), is the winner of the John Esten Cooke Award for Fiction.This honor is awarded annually by the MOSB to encourage authors of fiction to portray characters and events dealing with Southern history and the Civil War in a historically accurate fashion. It comes with a $1,000 monetary prize. Eric DelaBarre recently donated 1500 copies of his title Saltwater Taffy to the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. As a literacy advocate, Eric believes that learning how to read can change the lives of children across the country. You can view his motivational school visits here. Children's author, Karen Robertson's first book app, "Treasure Kai and the Lost Gold of Shark Island" was named a Digital Storytime "Top 25 Most Essential Children's Book App" and "Top 10 Most Original." Karen wrote a how-to guide for children's writers wanting to turn stories into apps. Called Author's Guide to Book Apps, it's the book Karen wishes she would have had a before creating her first book app. Holly Payne of Skywriter Books is so excited that her novel Kingdom of Simplicity won the grand prize for the Writers Digest Self-Published Book Awards. The award included a trip to NYC, an announcement and feature in PW and $3,000 cash.
Susanne Alexander-Heaton, Motivated by Nature, has been busy. She climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro for a Cause. 92% of South African public school libraries do not have books. She helped by raising $5,185 for Sharing to Learn in Makuleke for their library. She also donated some of her books to the library and visited them as Susanne, The Sunshine Faery.
