Independent Publishing Now 07/30/10
Greetings!

Welcome to another issue of "Independent Publishing Now" celebrating YOU, our members!

We hope you've been having a productive - yet relaxing - summer. Can you believe it's almost August? This is our "catch up" time here at the IBPA office having just finished back-to-back BEA and ALA shows. We're now preparing for the regional shows and Frankfurt Book Fair.

Speaking of productive, if you didn't catch Florrie's informative BISG webcast with Baker & Taylor, there is an excellent ForeWord review of it here. And, you can watch the entire broadcast replay here. For the latest info about Florrie and IBPA, remember to check in with the IBPA Blog.

If you've discovered a helpful site, found a better way of doing something or have a tip that will save other members time or money, please pass it along and we'll share it on your behalf.

And, as always, if you have a question, remember to give us a call, anytime.

If we don't have the answer, we'll find it for you!
IBPA Member Highlights & Happenings

IBPA member, N.Y.-based Square One Publishers has acquired IBPA member,  Safe Goods Publishing, based in Sheffield, Mass. Through the deal Square One, as of August 28, takes charge of the company's existing stock and backlist. Safe Goods, founded in 1993, specializes in the categories of diet, health and nutrition, and publishes such titles as by Rachel Bell and Dr. Howard Peiper, and The ADD & ADHA DietKids First by Dr. Ogi Ressel.

Jerry Craft, author of Mamma's Boyz (Mama's Boyz, Inc.), was a participant in "White and Whatever: Diversity in Children's & Young Adult Book Publishing", a panel of the 12th annual Harlem Book Fair from the Langston Hughes Auditorium in the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. You can view the panel at the C-Span Video Library here.

As reported in yesterday's Shelf Awareness...Congratulations to Dominique Raccah, publisher and CEO of Sourcebooks, who has won the 2010 Woman of Vision Award, which honors "groundbreaking, inspirational women who have made a difference in Chicago's business community" and is sponsored by the Chicago law firm of Arnstein & Lehr.

For a comic relief moment...a library twist on the recent Old Spice Commercials. Very funny!

In an interesting blend of books and art, Ocean Publishing will hold a Grand Opening and Art Show next Friday, August 6th, from 6 to 8 PM at its retail store and offices in downtown Flagler Beach. Frank Gromling, Ocean Publishing's founder, wants to celebrate with a special Art Show by award-winning artist Rick Cannizzaro. On display will be all of Ocean's 19 books and several forthcoming titles in its Marine Life Series and a four-book project with ocean conservationist Jean-Michel Cousteau.

We Have A Pope! published by New Springtime Press, author Karen Congeni, was awarded the Catholic Writers' Guild Seal of Approval. It also received this endorsement by the Most Rev. Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop  of New York: "We are all familiar with the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words. Karen Congeni's pictures are worth thousands of words in We Have A Pope! as she deftly explains the papacy to children. This book is a beautiful introduction for our young people to the ministry of the Successors to Saint Peter."

Jan Surasky tells us that her historical novel Rage Against the Dying Light, published by Sandalwood Press, is a winner in the 2010 Eric Hoffer Awards in the Commercial Fiction category.

"We'd never done anything like this before. The closest we came was remodeling our home in Natick, a two-year project. We found, thankfully, that brought us closer together, and that's been the effect of writing the book, too." - Dr. Joel Herskowitz, in a recent interview with the MetroWest Daily News about writing Swallow Safely: How Swallowing Problems Threaten the Elderly and Others.  with his wife Roya Sayadi.

Diana Hunter, noted nutrition researcher and award-winning author of FoodSmart: Understanding Nutrition in the 21st Century has been super busy these days (see pictures left) and is currently on a national tour. See her Network TV show host pitch here!
