Dear Friends, Each year's Pride of Heritage Banquet has its own unique blend of guests, décor and entertainment. This year we are especially proud to welcome Mr. Walid Toufic to entertain us. I had the opportunity to hear him sing this past summer and after sharing the experience with my friends, realized just how many people have heard him sing over the years and are looking forward to hearing him again. We encourage you to attend this year's banquet and be entertained, as he is known worldwide, by "The Arab Star".

Twelve Angry Lebanese
SHOW TIMES : SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT 4:20 pm SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 AT 3:35 pm
A Docu-Feature - 78 minutes
Directed by Zeina Daccache
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDvCifo3NE4
A theatre director, specializing in working with disadvantaged and traumatized people, Zeina Daccache struggled to set up Lebanon's first prison-based drama project in the country's notorious Roumieh Prison. For 15 months, 45 adult male inmates, some completely illiterate, found themselves working together to present an adaptation of the famous stage play '12 Angry Men', here re-named '12 Angry Lebanese'. Through their new-found creative outlet, we witness the prisoners coalesce into a slick, professional ensemble.
The drama therapy sessions, the interviews with the inmates, the moments of crisis, the moments of joy, and the interaction with both Daccache and the external audience, convey an extraordinary message of hope, forgiveness and change. In the course of their artistic journey, these "murderers, drug dealers and rapists" reveal kindness and faith in life. Inspiring and honest, this account of the prisoners' journey demonstrates the efficacy of drama therapy and its positive effects on some of the most ostracized individuals in society.

Falafel
SHOW TIMES: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT 2:10 pm & 8:05 pm
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 AT 12:30 pm
Feature Film | Lebanon/France | 83 minutes
Film written and directed by Michel Kammoun
http://www.arabfilmfestival.org/film_detail.php?id=193
Reminiscent of a Lebanese After Hours, Michel Kammoun's first feature film successfully depicts the story of Tou (Elie Mitri), a hip and charming Beirut university student whose attempts to enjoy a night out on the town are repeatedly sabotaged by residuals of a war that ended 16 years earlier. On a warm summer night just made for fun, Tou's only objectives are to torment his beloved younger brother, eat the most delicious falafel, and meet up at a party with Yasmin, the object of his affections. Seemingly on track, the night goes awry when he is humiliated by a driver intent on picking a fight. Angered by the incident, Tou leaves his comedic group of friends to search for this aggressor. As Tou travels through the nocturnal streets of Beirut, the city's underlying aura of uncertainty and potential violence is revealed. On first impression, Falafel is a stylish young party movie filled with comedy and sexual chemistry, yet just below the surface it possesses a subtle analysis of the ways in which the Lebanese war still lingers in the lives of those barely old enough to remember it.

In line with our exhibition's theme this year: Earth, Wind, Fire, Water: An Integral Relationship, the House of Lebanon Artists Group wishes to invite your child to participate in our Sunday afternoon Ceramic Workshop that is part of our 2011 Beyond Borders Exhibition. Please come enjoy the show and give your child this unique experience. Participating young artists will learn how to construct a small Lebanese water jug called 'Ibreek', in Arabic or (breek maye), a traditional Lebanese drinking vessel made out of baked terra cotta earthenware clay or hand blown glass. Drinking from a 'breek' is an art form, as it requires pouring the water directly into one's mouth without touching the spout of the water jug. Children will learn the construction process starting with a pinch pot and coiling building techniques. When form is finished and in process of drying, children will use various surface decoration methods available to them to enhance their pots and make them their very own and to take home at the end of the workshop. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Notes: - Participants should bring an Apron along with them to the workshop. - This Clay will not require baking to harden but should be left to air dry for few hours before handling. | | Reem Hammad, Art Exhibition Director, creating the children's art project -- the Ibreek. |
