Dear Friends of the House of Lebanon,

After many months of planning, our 2010 Pride of Heritage Banquet was an outstanding success and was a wonderful way to close out 2010 and welcome 2011.  We heard  many great comments summarizing the event, including..."I never stopped dancing, this was the best event ever!"  "We had so much fun, the food was great ."  "Jim Koury is truly an excellent choice for this year's award -- such a classy guy." Take a moment to view some of the pictures from the 2010 Pride of Heritage banquet

As we welcome 2011, we begin the new year with our 3rd annual Golf Classic on Monday, January 10th at the Wilshire Country Club.  If you are a golfer, come and play this prestigious course.   If golf isn't your sport, come for cocktails and dinner, and you can share in the tournament festivities and congratulate the 2010 tournament winners.

If you have any information you would like us to share with the House of Lebanon community, please email us at editor@HouseofLebanon.com.

Have a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy new year to you!

Best Wishes from Our House to Yours,
Karen Srour

Dear Friends,

I know that there are questions in our community about the delay in making the House of Lebanon a reality.  It has not been for lack of trying. Let me summarize some of our efforts for just this year.

We considered buying the Chevy Chase Country Club in Glendale, the Friars Club in Beverly Hills, a commercial building on Riverside Drive, an office building on Wilshire Boulevard and Highland, and presently we are doing a study on acquiring property in Anaheim near the Angels Baseball Stadium and Disneyland.

Additionally, we have a full time real estate broker looking for suitable locations for us.  The Board and Executive Committee have spent innumerable hours and diligent efforts in inspecting and evaluating these projects.  Our resolve and commitment remain staunch and unwavering.

I ask for your patience, understanding and continued support.  While we have not yet created the physical facility we have created the spirit of what will be the House of Lebanon.  We have brought the community together in our various activities.  We have established our presence as part of the fabric of this city.  The presence of the leadership of the City and County of Los Angeles officials at the Pride of Heritage Banquet and previous functions, is a testimonial that the Lebanese Americans have arrived and have taken their rightful place in Southern California.

Dear Friends,

As we enter into the final few days of 2010, I am reminded of the positive things we have accomplished within the community at the House of Lebanon this year.

  • The first Beyond Borders Art Exhibition produced by the House of Lebanon Artists' Group
  • Picnic, Concert,  and Children's Art Contest at the University of California, Irvine
  • Social Gatherings coordinated by the House of Lebanon and the Young Professional Groups
  • Co-Sponsored Day Trips with the Young Professionals and Artists' Group
  • Cultural and Informational Lecture Series sponsored by the Young Professionals at the Beverly Hills Library
  • Completion and Presentation of the Lebanese Flag created in mosaic by the guests of the Beyond Borders Art Exhibition to the Lebanese American Foundation.  This flag will be placed in the future home of the House of Lebanon.
  • Continued support by the House of Lebanon Board of Director Members of the brother and sister Lebanese and Middle Eastern Non-Profit Organizations in Southern California.
  • A successful Pride of Heritage Banquet, honoring James N. Koury.  Mr. Koury is most deserving of the Ray R. Irani Pride of Heritage Award and again on behalf of the Lebanese American Foundation Board of Directors, we offer our congratulations to him and we are proud to have him as our 2010 honoree.

We are looking forward to starting 2011 with our 3rd annual Golf Classic at the Wilshire Country Club.  We hope you will continue to be a part of the House of Lebanon and share in our success in 2011.

Artists' Group Spotlight | Huguette Caland

Huguette Calandwas born in Beirut, Lebanon, 1931. She is the only daughter of Bechara El Khoury, the first President of Lebanon.  Ms. Caland began painting at the age of 16 under the private tutelage of Fernando Manetti, an Italian artist then residing in Lebanon.

She then studied art at the American University of Beirut from 1964 to 1968. While at AUB, she executed a

sculpture portrait of her father in 1964 and also began the first prototypes of her embroidered and hand-painted gowns.

Over the next decade, she moved from Beirut to Paris, France in 1970, and then lived and worked in New

York (1981-1982).  Upon her return to Paris, she began work with Rumanian sculptor George Apostu on a series of stone, wood and terra cotta sculptures.

Ms. Caland currently lives and works in Venice, California.

The accomplishments of Huguette Caland is long and extensive, including numerous solo and group exhibitions of her drawings, graphic art and sculptures.  She is also involved in fashion design and collaborating on films and screenplays.   Her work can be found in private and public collections around the world, including the Bibliotheque Nationale and the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain in Paris.  Her works are permanently at the galerie Janine Rubeiz in Beirut, Lebanon.

On October 14th, the HOL artists went to meet and visit the home studio of Huguette Caland. It was an amazing experience, not only to see and discover her latest work, but to know Huguette's beautiful spirit with all her wisdom and generosity.

She opened her home to all of us, giving us the chance to explore her studio, work area, the artwork all over the walls, and sculptures. We went into her beautiful garden, the hand painted kitchen, her bedroom, even her closets. I cannot find the words for the perfect description of what we felt, but maybe some photos will do a bit of justice in sharing her beautiful kingdom.

We are honored to have Huguette Caland as a member of our group. We want to thank Huguette for her generosity and the delicious dinner she served us. (She was painting on her Abeye while we were eating and that describes how passionate she is  about her art). (Photos attached).
We had the chance to meet some of her family members and her granddaughter. We also would like to thank artist Nouha Sinno, Huguette's friend, for helping us having this visit.

Good luck Huguette on your coming up Solo Exhibition in Raouche, Beirut, Lebanon. January 2011. We were so lucky to see your latest series before shipping it there.
