House of Lebanon Board of Director Profile
Hanna Shammas, M.D.
Dr. Hanna Shammas is the co-founder of the Lebanese American
Foundation, Inc. for the House of Lebanon, and has served the Foundation as its
first President and Chairman of the Board.
Dr. Shammas is a Clinical professor of Ophthalmology at the
Keck School of Medicine, USC, and the Medical Director of the M/S Surgery
Center and the Shammas Eye Center, with its 4 offices in Lynwood, Downey,
Whittier and La Habra. He is the author of over 100 original articles in the
American and International literature, multiple chapters in medical books, and
6 textbooks related to ultrasonography of the eye and cataract surgery. He is a
frequent lecturer at local, national and international medical conventions.
The love of his native Lebanon has driven Dr. Shammas to be
very pro-active in the community. Besides his involvement in the House of
Lebanon project, he has served as National President of the Arab American
Medical Association, chairman of the Overseas Medical Convention in Lebanon, member
of the Board of International Advisors
of the Balamand University, trustee of the Lebanese American University, and
founding member of its University Hospital Foundation. He has received multiple
awards, notably Man of the Year award (Al-Majallah Magazine), Arab American
Forum Award (News Circle Publishing House), Abicenne Scholar award (National
Arab American Medical Association), Lifetime scientific achievement award
(American Lebanese Medical Association), Daniel Bliss Society award (American
University of Beirut) and the Paul Harris Fellow award (Rotary Club).
Furthermore, he was awarded the International Citizen Award by the
International Visitors Council of Los Angeles and the Cedars Medal by the
President of the Republic of Lebanon.
In 1976, while completing his specialization at the
University of Iowa, he met and got married to the love of his life, Dr. Najwa
Mirhij, who was also completing her specialization in Pediatrics and Pediatric
Infectious Diseases. The civil war in Lebanon prevented the newlyweds from
returning to Lebanon. They decided to move to Los Angeles, and have been living
there ever since. They are the proud parents of three daughters, Rania, Maya
and Lina.

House of Lebanon Artists' Group SpotlightDzovig
Dzovig is a
Lebanese-Armenian born and raised in Lebanon, currently living in Los Angeles, California.
At an early age, she was already performing in regional plays and singing at
talent shows. Soon, she discovered her love and passion for the performing arts.
She enjoys Latin and ballroom dancing. She has also earned her Masters degree
in Civil Engineering from AUB (American
University of Beirut). Dzovig has
participated in several competitions, both regional and worldwide, and won
first prizes. Besides being a singer and songwriter, she also enjoys acting and
has appeared in several independent films. "At a
propitious moment, Mrs. Amira Matar directed me to Mrs. Carole Choucair, who
introduced me to HOL where I met like-minded, interesting artists. I enjoy
being a part of this talented group where we exchange artistic experiences and
promote the image of the Lebanese culture and heritage", says she. Dzovig's
latest project, "Pink Tail Tip", is a unique piece of work whose idea
was conceived after realizing that the Armenian community lacked animated fun
children's songs. Now Dzovig is releasing her first 16-song album in two
formats: "Armenian Children's Party Songs" CD and musical animation DVD. Her work can be seen on her website: www.BOCHIG.com . Dzovig hopes to release
animation videos of the "Pink Tail Tip" project in the future, both in Arabic
and in English. Most
recently, Dzovig co-produced a musical documentary with Mr. Hanna Hajjar,
titled "Happy No More", about the latest BP mishap in the Gulf
of Mexico. A portion of the proceeds will go to a non-profit
environmental organization. The song can be downloaded on the website: www.LittleSeas.com, and the music video will
soon be available.
