Dear Friends of the House of Lebanon,

As promised, the annual House of Lebanon picnic at UC Irvine was fun and relaxing.  We would like to share some of our favorite photos taken by Michael Alti, HOL-YP Executive Committee Member and Carole Choucair Oueijan, Artists' Group Chairman.

The HOL Young Professional Group is sponsoring a lecture series at the Beverly Hills Library this summer free of charge.  This three part series ranges in topics from Arabic poetry to buying your first home and concludes with a documentary movie screening by Artists' Group member Wissam Kabbara.  Mark your calendar to attend one or all of these lectures.

Finally, we invite you to take a moment to view our new community calendar and don't forget to save the date for the Beyond Borders Art Exhibit in Long Beach this October.

If you have any information you would like us to share with the House of Lebanon community, please email us at editor@HouseofLebanon.com.

Did you Know?
The Lebanese flag was raised in Bshamoun on the 21st of November 1943 at 11:20 pm. It is believed that this same flag is now kept in the National Museum, although it may have been transported to the Governmental Palace in Bieteddine.

The Red: The red stripes symbolize the pure bloodshed in the aim of liberation.
The White: The white stripe symbolizes peace, purity and the white snow covering Lebanon's mountains.
The Green: The green cedar (Arz) (Species: Cedrus Libani or Lebanon Cedar) symbolizes immortality and steadiness.

Most Lebanese flags hoisted or depicted in flag charts are not correct. According to the Constitution Law of December 7, 1943, the three colors of the flag must be red, white and green. (Branches and trunks of the cedar are usually colored in brown for the sake of realism, but this is NOT correct).
It is a common mistake to draw the branches of the cedar in brown or black. Nevertheless, the mistake is unconstitutional. The cedar must be fully green.
Lebanese Flag
The Beyond Borders Art Exhibition, will be holding an Educational Lebanese Flag Workshop for children on Sunday, October 10th from 1-3 PM, as part of their activities, to learn more about the Lebanese flag.

Each child who signs up for the workshop, will have the opportunity to make a flag in plastic tesserae mosaic.  It will be safe and easy for the children to use. They will learn the history and meaning of the Lebanese flag and the flag's correct colors, dimensions, contents and composition. Each child will take home their own completed mosaic Lebanese flag!

HOL Artist and art teacher Michelle Constantine will be leading the session.  You may reserve a seat for your child by emailing the House of Lebanon office. There is no charge for the children's workshop.

You won't want to miss this event, so mark your calendar for October 10th from 1 - 3 pm.  To sign up for this free event, please email the House of Lebanon office with the following information 1)Child's Name; 2) Child's Age; 3)Parent Name; 4) Parent Email Address; and 5) Parent Phone Number.  Email reservations can be made at art@HouseofLebanon.com.

Batroun Mountain Winery
50 Kilometers north of Beirut, falls the x miles of grape fields... the Batroun Mountains fields...

It all started with the vision of one man,  Assaad Hark, who was born in the city of Batroun and aimed at its mountains, to realize his lifetime dream...producing wine.  With an international business background, and a passion for wine, he created the selective and unique taste of the "Batroun Mountains " brand.  "It is the uniqueness of Batroun district plus our grape growing practices and winemaking methods that created the exceptional quality of our wines" says Mr. Hark.

Assaad and wife Katy have a family of 6 children.  Joined by one passion, they all share the pleasure of the wine business.  "Our daily work is a true family affair where every member of our family is involved either in the growing, producing, bottling or marketing of our products.  For us, winemaking has been a lifetime passion, a pursuit of the heart, which you will experience when tasting our wines."

We believes that good wines are primarily made in the field and not in the winery and for that reason all of the wines are produced only from estate grown grapes that is in order to guarantee and maintain a continued supply of superior quality grapes. "
 Batroun Mountains
Consequently, extraordinary wines can only be made from extraordinary grapes. The grapes are picked very late and only the most mature ones are selected guaranteeing impeccable quality.  Great care is taken to pre-pick the vineyards several times to gather only the best bunches. This selective harvest results in an ultra-premium quality wine.  Absolutely no irrigations are used; the vines rely solely on the soil water content from the previous rainy season. All of our vines are grown in well-drained soil on narrow terraced vineyards contoured to steep mountainsides.

Another principal quality factor is our commitment to low yields where strict quantity guidelines are followed.  Only an average of 1.2 kg (2.65 lb) of grapes is allowed per vines, a yield limitation matched only by a handful of prestigious Chateaus in France.  Lebanon's western coastal region is blessed with nearly perfect weather conditions for growing grapes. Virtually every year is an exceptional one; with an average year occurring about once every ten years. This commitment to quality consistently provides our winemaker with the best grapes to handcraft exceptional wines of depth and complexity..

Batroun Mountains is committed to traditional wine-making which is the gentle process of providing and maintaining ideal conditions, so that nature can do its work with minimum interference, i.e. no enzymes, no fining agents and no ultra filtrations are used.

Today, Batroun Mountain's primary goal is to produce the highest quality wine at the expense of low quantity.  Consequently only a limited volume is available for purchase every year in the USA and in Lebanon. "In Batroun, we are raised believing in the good times, and know how to enjoy great gatherings...where a big part of it, is having an impeccable taste of a wine bottle at the table..." "Batroun Mountains is a personal value...an intimacy that my family and I wanted to share with the world...Cheers! "

News from Our Friends Around the World

Lebanese filmmaker, Roy Khalil wrote to tell us that his short movie entitled "All Birds Whistle" has been chosen this year to be in the Official Selection of the Palm Springs International Shortfest!
More Information

Dr. Joanna Medawar Nachef, Director of Choral Activities at El Camino College has been very busy lately.  In June, she was the Artistic Director of the Los Cancioneros Master Chorale Spring Concert East Meets West was held on June 20th.  Dr.Nachef told us "this is a new publication of Arabic and American choral music." The audience was able to hear how the cultures of America and the Middle East share a common humanity and the potential to rekindle the flickering flame of peace.

Our friend, Her Excellency Honorary Ambassador Graziella Seif, wrote to tell us about her new appointment of Honorary Ambassador. She continues to say, "I'm working now with many International organizations, as the Amnesty International, Transparency International, Organization of Francophonie, World Cultural Lebanese Union, Unesco, Unicef.... And after the successful tours I've accomplished around the world last year, especially to USA & Africa, I'll be honored in Beirut by those organizations."

Multi-media and House of Lebanon artist, Doris Bittar and poet Diane Gage are collaborating to create "Tec-Tang-Tarab," a relief wall piece that combines sound, sight and language with changeable/interactive components.  "Tec-Tang-Tarab" references the diverse cultures that populate California and the Americas, as well as the process of people rooted in one culture encountering aspects of others.  It layers patterns, words, phrases and sounds from the local indigenous culture of the Aztecs (tec), ancient Chinese poetry (tang), and improvisational Middle Eastern music synthesized from African, Byzantine, and Indo-European sources (tarab).  These three sources embrace a large array of ethnicities and subcultures.  Each of them grew to be substantial, dominant and fecund, giving birth to other forms within their regions and creating spinoffs for two thirds of the world.
