House of Lebanon Director Profile
Nabil Feghali, MD

Dr. Nabil Feghali moved to the Los Angeles area in the summer of
1980 after finishing five years of medical training Internship and residency in
Cleveland, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Feghali continues his story saying,
"I had enough of the snow and the hard weather, so I thought I would spend
couple of years here waiting for the situation in Lebanon to improve so I could
return and start my real life back in Lebanon. I started my practice in Canoga Park in August 1980. Many of my patients were Lebanese, Arabs, and
Armenians, as I had sent announcement letters to the local Lebanese
churches. The word got around and I soon
found my waiting room full of patients exchanging news they heard from
different sources and comforting each other. To this day, I have a large ratio of my patients of Lebanese and Middle
Eastern extract which I enjoy very much. Actually, it makes up for the fact that I always felt odd to never to
have had the opportunity to return to Lebanon to practice medicine. I got married soon after moving to Los Angeles and started a
family. My practice got busy very
quickly. Having a deep connection with
my patients and the community, I realized that my life here in Los Angeles,
would be for the good. I visit Lebanon almost yearly for vacation and
reconnection with the homeland, but I always feel in a hurry to return
"home" to my work and my many friends. I have enjoyed living here tremendously and I managed to be a
week-end warrior satisfying my hobbies of motorcycling, going to the Rock store
on Mulholland by the Pacific Coast Highway, hunting during hunting season,
playing cards with the Magnificent Seven,
taking their money when I can and lately giving more time to gentler
activities, such as golfing with some great friends. I joined the house of
Lebanon at the suggestion of Dr Hanna Shammas and met very nice Lebanese
interacting for the good of the project while developing a great network of
enthusiasts and social groups."

House of Lebanon Director Profile
Ghaleb A. Saab, MD Director Oncology/Hemotology Program

Before
moving to California, I was on the academic staff at the AUB Medical
Center since 1980. I became Associate Professor and
eventually the chief of the Oncology/Hematology department and
its research and clinical training programs until 1987 when we moved to
the U.S. During my tenure, I was elected as representative of the School
of Medicine to the University Senate, and was active member of numerous
committees including the Admissions Committee to the School of Medicine. Another
significant activity was overseeing the computerization of the Tumor Registry
program, the first of its kind to provide national statistics about
various cancers in the country. Those early statistics were the
source of a number of publications I authored, comparing disease incidence
with the West and other parts of the world. Finally, I also had the
privilege to publish a total of 30 scientific papers, some in
collaboration with AUB colleagues from various subspecialties at the
time. This was a unique academic
experience that would favorably compare to that of the
finest medical institutions here in the U.S. I feel I am as indebted to
AUB as I am to my family for being the person I am today, both professionally
and intellectually. My wife
Dida is also an AUB graduate. She has a Masters in Plant Protection,
School of Agriculture. After working in her field for a few years, she expanded
her studies to the field of Education at the University of Redlands and has
been teaching for 14 years. We have two children, Zeina and Faysal. Zeina
got her Masters from MIT in Urban Planning and International Development and is
now working at the United Nations in New York. Faysal just completed his
2nd year of medical school at UCLA. I joined
the Riverside Medical Clinic in 1990, and recently moved to a state-of-the-art
$35 million facility we built in downtown. The Clinic is a 120-physician
multispecialty group, the largest of its kind, spread over 7 campuses in
Riverside County. The medical oncology department has become the
showcase of the Inland Empire. Through integrated technology, our healthcare
system is fully electronic, covering medical records, radiology
imaging, labs, patient access to records/doctors, chemotherapy
ordering/stocking/dispensing and prescriptions e-dispatched to local and
regional pharmacies. The practicing physician has immediate access to
outpatient and hospital records at the tips of his fingers, from
office and from home. The group is certainly spearheading the
healthcare revolution at the community level. Philanthropy
is at the heart of my worldly interests outside Medicine. Thanks to my wife
Dida, we are quite active in supporting a number of local and national
organizations for the advancement of leukemia/lymphoma research and other
non-profit worthy causes like the Goeske Foundation. In addition, we have
been supporting humanitarian efforts in Lebanon, including our
hometown Choueifat. And of course, The House of Lebanon remains at the heart of
all this activity, reconnecting us to our past and creating a bridge to
future generations.

House of Lebanon Artists' Group Spotlight
Sam Hassan Sam
Hassan, a native of Syria, has always been passionate in capturing nature's
triumphant colors and stunning design. It
was this passion that led him to creatively embrace and further develop the
"Damascene Ornamental Fine Art" medium. His
artwork reflects a combination of symmetrical designs, rich, natural colors,
and the inspiration he draws from nature. Several
of his pieces are currently being displayed at the University of St. Thomas
exhibit "Sabeel: Artistic Journeys from Arab Lands to America" through May 24th,
and the permanent collection exhibit "Ahlan Wa Sahlan" at the Arab American
National Museum in Michigan. His artwork
will also be displayed on stage at the "Turath Ensemble" May 2nd
concert in Garden Grove, California. Fellow
member and artist Reem Hammad introduced Sam to HOL's Artists' Group. "It is an honor to be part of HOL's Artists'
Group where we can share, communicate, and work towards enriching ourselves and
others of our artistic culture. " You can reach Sam at sam@samhassanart.com or view more art on his website.
