Information on the Biennial
Dear Friends of the House of Lebanon,

Change is taking place at the House of Lebanon.  Change is a challenge and an opportunity and we have a new opportunity ahead of us.

The HOL Artists' Group, established in 2006 and consisting of 44 members, will soon see their dream realized and shall hold their first major group art exhibition on October 9th and 10th, 2009.  Their show, Beyond Borders, will feature the fine artworks of American Lebanese, Middle Eastern and American Artists from the House of Lebanon.

This show will be free to the public, but our costs for this show will be almost $10,000.  Would you help sponsor this show?  We are hoping that you will join our family of supporters today with a generous, tax deductible gift of $25, $50, $75 or more for the Beyond Borders Art Exhibition.  If you wish to help, please go to our website for donation information.

George H. Schwary

George Schwary
George Schwary was born in Whittier California, and is a first generation Lebanese American.  His father, Harry Schwary, came to the United States in 1919 from Zahle, Lebanon.

Attending the University of Southern California, he majored in Foreign Trade.  After graduation, he went into the Retail Home Appliance and Television business for 35 years, retiring in 1987.  Tired of playing golf and loafing,  he started HMG, Inc. a property management company which bought and sold property along with imagining.

In 2002, needing yet another new challenge, George went into the Thoroughbred Horse Racing Business. He now has a stable of race horses,  brood mares  and horses in training. His most successful "claim to fame"  is a horse named Georgie Boy.  He bred, raised him and watched him win a total of six graded stakes races, including winning the Sunshine Millions Sprint and San Carlos Handicap at Santa Anita.   This month, watch for some of George's other horses who will be racing-- Miss Georgie Girl, Phoenician Star and Rhetorically.  George is one of the most successful horse owners in Southern California.

As George so aptly says, "so with the Horses and USC football I am enjoying life.  With hope for the future, I would like to see Our House of Lebanon a reality!"

After graduate school, he worked as an economics consultant in New York City, where he helped manage teams providing quantitative analysis in securities litigation cases.

Reverend Farid Shoucair  Rev. Farid Shoucair

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of HOL Artists' Group Chairman, Carole Choucair Oueijan's father, Rev. Farid Shoucair who died of a heart attack last month, on the morning of the 21st of October in Lebanon. His departure was a shock to everyone as he was a healthy man at age 70.

He started his career as an accountant and worked for 25 years as a CPA. He was married to Therese Barakat and raised three kids, Eliane, Carole and Fady.

His love for nature and his passion to work with the younger generation inspired him to become the leader of several Boy Scouts organizations and other national and international groups. In 1970 he founded the Scout National Orthodox, SNO. We were all involved in this organization, my mother leading his side, and our weekends and summers were dedicated to camping, hiking, meetings and other youth activities.

In 1975 he became a priest in Deir Mar Elias in Dhour El-Shweir after several years of studies in convents and in Balamand University. After the death of my mother, he was sent to Greece by his Bishop to learn the art of mosaic iconography.

In his lifetime, he restored 3 churches and built 3 other churches like Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Ballouneh, Keserwan, where he served it for 25 years.

He was an active member in the HOL Artists' Group. Artist Reem Hammad took the last photograph of him when she visited lebanon last month. She was surprised to see him in Mar Elias convent. (Photos attached)

His passing is an enormous loss to everyone who knew him. The love of his family, parish and friends is indescribable. After visiting Lebanon last week, I see how many lives he has enriched and he will never be forgotten.

When we heard the news of this passing, my 16 year-old son, Nicolas, held my hands and said, "Jiddo Abouna was a good man, and he prayed all his life to be closer to God, and now he's in His arms".
