Young Professionals Spotlight: Chahira Solh
By: Ray Harake

Chahira SolhIntelligent, pensive and discerning are some words that characterize Chahira Solh, Membership Director for the House of Lebanon Young Professionals Executive Committee (HOLYP).  During quarterly HOLYP meetings, Solh likes to take in her surroundings and then respond or contribute appropriately, but behind the quiet and reserved disposition is a determined and caring young woman.

Born in Gherden, Germany, to a Lebanese father and  Syrian mother, Chahira was named after her paternal grandmother. Solh draws inspiration from her namesake.  Growing up, she saw her grandmother pushing the envelope which has driven her to excellence.

Solh grew up in sunny Los Angeles and attended Beverly Hills High School where she excelled academically and athletically.  She was active on her high school's varsity teams in Basketball and Track and Field.  She did not venture far for her undergraduate education, choosing to study at UCLA because of its reputation for academic excellence.  She majored in Economics and History and worked as a tutor throughout her undergraduate years.

After taking some Economics courses that had a legal focus, the field of Law piqued her interest.  Consequently, she attended the prestigious Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago.

After graduating with a law degree from Northwestern, Solh had had enough of Illinois' bitter winters and accepted a position with Crowell & Moring, LLP, in Orange County, CA.  Presently, Solh focuses her practice on antitrust matters, including transactional, litigation and counseling.

Solh has counseled clients on matters ranging from cooperation with government antitrust investigations, antitrust issues associated with mergers and acquisitions, prosecution and defense of various antitrust litigation actions.

During her spare time, Solh enjoys traveling to visit friends across the country and family in Europe and the Middle East. Solh loves being part of HOLYP because it helps young professionals from the community network.
Reflections on Journeys in Lebanon and Jordan
By: Michael Alti

YP Bcharre
Spending the Christmas season in Lebanon is a magical experience I will always cherish.  December is when thousands of Lebanese migrs and students return to their roots to celebrate the holidays with their families.  I relished the opportunity to meet with old friends and family, share stories about where life has taken us over the past year, and to make new friends.

On a personal note, it was wonderful celebrating Christmas with my grandparents, uncle and aunt, and now grown up cousins who have become skiing champions at Faraya since my last visit 5 years ago.  My fondest memories entailed walking the narrow streets of Achrafieh and smiling at the sight of families sharing quality time with each other and YP downtown beirutreinforcing their family bonds.  The huge mall ABC was bustling with shoppers completing their Christmas gift lists deliberately ignoring fears generated by the global recession.  Wherever I went, I heard the warm and comforting voice of Fairouz over loudspeakers singing the Arabic version of "Jingle Bells."  Most remarkable to me was the unwavering resilience of the Lebanese people to continue with their lives despite all adversity.  In spite of the devastation of the 2006 war, or perhaps fueled by it, and in spite of continued political instability, the Lebanese refuse to give up, consistently maintaining hope in their future and living their lives to the fullest.   The Lebanese are used to dealing with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and our success is in large part attributed to our ability to overcome them.

At Harissa, I reflected on an exceptional 2008, and I thanked God for the bountiful gifts he has given me.  Ruminating on the Lebanese model of persistence and hope, I felt proud of my heritage.  Most importantly, I understood that with persistence, hard work, and the right attitude, anything is possible, including the realization of the dream for lasting peace and prosperity in Lebanon.

A couple days later, I left the hustle and bustle of Beirut for a day of tranquility in the mountains, driving to wherever the road would lead me and enjoying spectacular scenery in the snow-covered Tannourine region.  My most poignant reflections were inspired by the beautiful village of Bcharr.  This ancient town is nestled in a remote area high in the mountains above the Kadisha valley.  Bcharr features beautiful architecture, red tiled houses, and outstanding views.  Of YP Gibran Housecourse, it is most famous as the home of Khalil Gibran, one of the most inspirational men of the 20th century.  Visiting his childhood home, I was struck by the power of Gibran's humble origins, particularly how a family of eight shared a very simple one room home!  Living in a society dominated by consumerism and materialism, I reflected on how Gibran's background influenced this man to become a profound philosopher and one of the world's greatest poets and writers.  Clearly, Gibran understood the concept of "substance over form."  My visit to Bcharr reminded me to seek the truth that lies beneath the surface, and that one's treasure lies where his heart is.

After Lebanon, I traveled through Jordan and visited the magnificent and remarkably well-preserved Roman ruins at Jerash, the towering crusader castle Krak de Montreal, and the rugged landscape of the desert at Wadi Rum.    Atop Mount Nebo, I marveled at the wide expanse of the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea and was amazed to see as far as Jerusalem and Bethlehem, praying that one day peace will prevail in the Holy Land.  At Petra, I was mesmerized by the beauty of "this rose-red city half as old as time."  While I had seen many pictures of Petra's famous "Treasury," YP Petratrekking through the massive ruins was an unforgettable experience that caused my imagination to run wild.  The journey began walking through the "Siq," a narrow canyon that seemed to serve as a time portal transporting me back centuries to Petra's glory days.  Hidden at the end of the narrow Siq, Petra features the even larger "Monastery," hundreds of varied tombs, a Roman-style theatre, a Roman road, and countless other treasures.   Pondering how this great capital of the Nabatean empire eventually declined into a forgotten city, I considered the finite nature of all of man's creations, concluding that what is most important is not what we make, it's how we treat each other.  While civilization has put a man on the moon, much remains in terms of learning to love and respect each other so we can all live in peace.

A Day at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach
By: Nancy Salem

On a cool and crisp morning in February, the House of Lebanon Young Professionals journeyed to discover the wonders of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. The world-class Aquarium is home to more than 500 species of ocean animals that inhabit the Pacific Ocean.  The Aquarium allows visitors to explore the three major regions which include, Southern California and Baja, the Tropical Pacific, and the Northern Pacific.  The tour was led by HOLYP's Executive Committee member Michael Alti who shared his vast knowledge about the exhibits.

A group of 15 HOLYP members strolled through the Southern California YP Amer Capt Morganand Baja exhibits enjoying a glimpse of sea stars, swaying kelp, sea rays, and the official state fish of California: the colorful Garibaldi.  In the Northern Pacific exhibit, members were captivated by the puffin, a seabird with exceptional diving capabilities that spends most of the year at sea.  Additionally, members were mesmerized by the jellyfish and sea nettles as they gracefully swam in the tanks illuminated by special lighting.  The Tropical Pacific exhibit was full of colorful marine life, including coral, sea horses, sea dragons and both the leafy and YP diverweedy sea dragons.  HOLYP members were drawn to the incredible ability of the leafy and weedy sea dragons to camouflage themselves with the seaweed and the surrounding environment.  Members also touched marine life such as sea anemone, sea urchin, and starfish at the touch tank.  Each of the animals had a distinctive reaction to the sensation of touch, and the experience raised the awareness of the HOLYP members about marine life.

TYP Amer Capt Morganhe group also explored the outdoor exhibits at the Aquarium including the Shark Lagoon and the Lorikeet Forest. Shark Lagoon is home to more than 150 sharks and stingrays. HOLYP members Ray Harake, Michael Alti, Chahira Solh, Reema Radwan, Chuck Peavey and Amer Hazboon (pictured) were able to touch the gentle sharks and stingrays in this interactive exhibit.  The final destination was the Lorikeet Forest, home to more than 100 vibrant birds from Australia.  Amer, Chuck, Michelle, Roula, and Michael purchased small cups of nectar and fed the colorful and friendly birds.

After a fun-filled day of adventure at the Aquarium, HOLYP members enjoyed lunch at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.  It was a wonderful time to relax, mingle and discuss the day's discoveries.  The staff at the restaurant quizzed the members regarding their knowledge of the film which inspired the restaurant, Forrest Gump.  Laughter and good food were shared, and the members expressed their enthusiasm for future events.  Additionally, this event brought five new members to the organization who had not attended previous events.  The new members expressed appreciation for events that provide educational and cultural experiences in a relaxed atmosphere.  When asked about his experience at the Aquarium with HOLYP, Amer Hazboon stated "I had a great time! It was refreshing being able to connect with like-minded young professionals in a comfortable and fun environment. I'm looking forward to the next event."
