Father Dunnam and Cindy D'Alimonte to Attend
Every three years the Episcopal Church holds what is called the General Convention. Each diocese, 110 in all - and in our case, the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe - is represented by four Clergy and four Lay members. Our Rector will be one of the Clergy Deputies and Cindy D'Alimonte, a member of St. James Church, will be one of the Lay Deputies in what is called the House of Deputies. Our Bishop will meet at the same time with the other bishops in the House of Bishops.
At the General Convention, a budget is approved for the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church on a national and international level. Many resolutions dealing with various aspects of our common life and ministry are voted on. For a resolution to pass, both "houses" must agree, or concur. For further information about the General Convention, updates, and the Episcopal Church in general, please go to the web site: episcopalchurch.org .

Lecture at the British Institute
On Wednesday, June 27, at 6:00 PM, Charles E. Cecil will give a lecture entitled "John Singer Sargent: Portraitist and Innovator." This talk puts Sargent (born in Florence in 1856) within a tradition of English portrait painters - Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Lawrence - that was mediated to him by Carolus-Duran, and that stretched back to Van Dyck and Velasquez. Charles Cecil, founder and director of the Cecil Studio in Borgo San Frediano, is the leading exponent in Florence of oil painting in this tradition.

Art Exhibits at Palazzo Strozzi:
Americans in Florence - Sargent and the American Impressionists (March 3-July 15)
American Dreamers - Reality and Imagination in Contemporary American Art (CCC Strozzina, March 9 - July 15)
On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci, Palazzo Strozzi explores American painters' relationship with Italy. Americans in Florence. Sargent and the American Impressionists focuses on John Singer Sargent, and on the Florentine circle around the influential young Italo- American collector Egisto Fabbri. The exhibition takes a close look at the influence Italy had on American painting in the second half of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. It also looks at the impact of the Americans - fresh, young and boisterous - on Tuscan culture. A second exhibition, in the Palazzo Strozzi's Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina (CCCS), American Dreamers, takes a look at new trends in American contemporary art.
