Edith Wharton's Italian Backgrounds: Lecture by Bonnie McMullen at the British Institute

Edith Wharton (1862-1937) sought to set herself apart from ordinary American and English travelers, while showing them how a change in perspective could deepen their experience of the country. Conscious of how much had already been written about Italy, she demonstrated how, away from well-charted approaches, the country is a source of surprising and enriching experiences. Bonnie McMullen is an independent scholar from the UK.
