A Monthly Encounter
Are you in search of spirituality? Do you believe that you can still find vital impulses in Christianity despite its long and difficult history? Are you perplexed by resistance to change? Do you wonder if it is possible to reconcile faith and people's reality? Do you want to avoid becoming entrapped in rigid new orthodoxies? Are you not looking for absolutes, but enjoy sharing your hopes and listening to others' ideas? We will be exploring these and other themes. The meetings will be held in Italian.
Mark Dunnam (Rector). Prof. Gianluigi Gugliermetto (Teologo Anglicano), in collegamento Skype da Chicago. Dr. Nicoletta Arbusti (Chiesa Episcopale Americana - psicologa). Co-relatrice e Moderatore degli incontri: Dr. Anita Tosi, Teologa, Chiesa Cattolica Romana.

Scene and Heard: Dafne, Euridice, and Beyond - The Birth of Opera in Florence
Following John Hoenig's talk last year on Buontalenti's designs for the Intermedi of 1589, this lecture will continue the journey of Florentine music theatre. The composers and designers of the late cinquecento festivals all directly contributed to the future development of opera over the subsequent decades. The talk will focus on the pioneering work of the composers Peri, Caccini, da Gagliano and Monteverdi, and on the designers Buontalenti, Cigoli, and the Parigis. The common themes of the early operas were Apollo and Daphne, and Orpheus and Eurydice. These legends continued to inspire Gluck, Haydn and Richard Strauss. Through images and music, John Hoenig, who has had an extensive career as a theatre director and lighting designer, will trace a path along which there are many signposts for further research - in the palazzi of Florence.
All are welcome
