Professor Yousefzadeh of New York University will address the role played by the city of Florence in the symbolic construction of the Italian nation-state during the period immediately after the Italian national unification. Referring to the aesthetic, cultural and urban policies adopted by the Florentine municipality for the 1865 Dante sexcentenary, she will probe into the contradictory and the uneven process of modernization. Addressed, in addition, will be the relevance of aesthetic and cultural policy for contemporary Florence, as well as for other cities as they endure the course of globalization.
