The Birth of Christianity

As part of our Thursdays in Lent program this year, we will begin each evening at 7:30 PM with a book study led by Dr. Gianluigi Gugliermetto. This Lent we will look at The Birth of Christianity: Discovering What Happened in the Years Immediately After the Execution of Jesus, by Dominic Crossan (ISBN 0-06-061660).

One reviewer writes:

"Christianity arose out of the interaction of the historical Jesus and his first companions. It was not invented by Paul. That is the stunning hypothesis of Crossan's The Birth of Christianity. Like the master craftsman he is, Crossan has forged a picture of the earliest Christianity - of the dark years, the 30s and 40s [B.C.E.] - in debate with other scholars and in the combination of social science theory, Galilean archaeology, close textual analysis, and historical reconstruction . No one controls the issues, the data, and the options as well as Crossan. His reconstruction is essential reading for anyone serious about Christian origins and its fate in the third millennium." - Robert W. Funk, Chair, The Jesus Seminar, and author of The Acts of Jesus.

Immigration in Italy: A Cultural Perspective

The Meeting of Cultures as a Chance for Transformation

This Sunday, March 20,  Anna Zucconi will present the topic of "Immigration in Italy: A Cultural Perspective - The meeting of cultures as a chance for transformation." Ms. Zucconi is a representative of Caritas, a Roman Catholic relief organization. She has worked for sixteen years with immigrants in Florence, who often suffer from a very peculiar kind of poverty: the fact itself of living in a foreign land. She will explore with us the opportunities for a real and open-minded meeting of cultures, and what this kind of meeting could offer to Florence and to the Italian society at large.

Grab a cappuccino and join us in the Meeting Room at 10 AM.

Feast of Oscar Romero and the Martyrs of El Salvador

Where & When
Date: Sunday, March 27
Sunday, March 27, St. James will observe the Feast of Oscar Romero and the Martyrs of El Salvador

Oscar Romero, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Salvador from 1977-1980, became the "voice of the voiceless" in El Salvador during a time of terrible government repression and the beginning of that country's 12-year civil war.  His outspokenness on behalf of the poor and oppressed led to his assassination March 24, 1980 while celebrating the Eucharist in the small chapel of La Divina Providencia.

Oscar Romero and the Martyrs of El Salvador were added to the Episcopal Church's commemorative calendar in 2009. March 24th and the subsequent Sunday, the Third Sunday in Lent, March 27th, offer particular opportunity for a rededication to the godly values that animated Romero's life, ministry and martyrdom and the martyrdom of thousands of men and women in El Salvador.

The theme will be "Water". It is a mammoth topic and creativity is invited. We know how precious and life giving water is. We are also very much aware of the powerful and destructive force water can be. Come and present yourself to God in loving expectation and longing. God is waiting for you with open arms.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Clair+ at: [email protected] or +43 646720107 for a conversation.
