Greetings!
March 22 is World Water Day. And access to safe water is critically important for our health. Did you know that 20% of the world's population, or more than 1 billion people, do not have access to clean, safe drinking water? More than 2 million people die each year because they lack clean drinking water. Most are children under the age of five.
Fortunately, there are some low-tech affordable solutions to this problem. Here are two practical ideas that have been used widely in many parts of the world. For more information about clean water, check out the Water page on the Global CHE Network site. In addition, you will find lessons about clean water for children, as well as health storying ideas.

SODIS
SODIS stands for SOlar DISinfection of water. This simple technique uses only sunlight and a soda bottle, but it produces clean drinking water after one day of full sunlight.
Read more about SODIS on our Water page, or from www.sodis.ch.
BIOSAND FILTERS Another way to purify water is through biosand filters, using a combination of sand and gravel with a biolayer on top. The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology, or CAWST, has perfected this technique to produce large quantities of safe water. Download their manual from our site. |
