About this Smart Salon

Companies can be great at creating new ideas. But they can also be good at killing them. Professor Patrick Whitney, Dean of the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology, shares with us the top 10 ways that companies commit innovation suicide. These include "wanting to innovate as long as it does not involve change" and "not knowing perfection is the enemy of success." Professor Whitney will be joined by panelists Richard Whitehall of Smart Design and Steve Smith, a venture capitalist with more than 25 years of experience in the field.

More about Professor Patrick Whitney

BusinessWeek has profiled Patrick Whitney as a "design visionary" for bringing together design and business. Forbes named him as one of six members of the "E-Gang" for his work in human-centered design. And Fast Company has identified him as a "master of design" for linking the creation of user value and economic value.

His research includes developing new design frameworks that respond to two transformations: the shift from mass-production to flexible production and the shift from national markets to markets that are both global and "markets of one." His research is supported by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

More about Steve Smith

Steve Smith is a master at discovering hidden value that companies often miss. His interests include building private equity and venture capital vehicles appropriate for Responsible Investing mandates. He advises venture/equity groups and helps early/growth stage companies develop strategies and raise capital. He also recently served as advisor for Nike and The New York Times.
