Dear Members:

It's hard to believe how quickly the months have flown by. Summer seems like a distant memory, and the holiday season looms ahead. As always the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce has spent much of its time and energy on our members, and on how we can use our resources to benefit you.
One of the most significant tasks we had occurred this week, on Monday, October 31. The VCC's Policy Committee was invited to make a presentation to the House of Commons Standing Committee on green energy initiatives. As Vaughan has been hard hit during this recession with many manufacturing job losses, the Chamber has been working on this submission to the Standing Committee to encourage "green energy" programs (particularly solar energy) which would kick-start our local economy and hopefully start a re-hiring progression. The presentation included a recommendation that Canada would be well-served by the funding and establishment of an industry association that would recognize Canada as a potential world leader in the solar industry, promote business opportunities associated with the solar industry, and explore opportunities for public and private sector partnerships to further the solar industry.
I attended the presentation with Policy Chair Lynne Wallace and I believe that the presentation went very well. When questioned as to where the Chamber stood on raising or lowering taxes, the Chamber's response was that, in speaking for small and mid-sized business, that in a time of so much economic uncertainty, we didn't feel that raising taxes was a wise choice for business.
As the Chair of the Vaughan Chamber Board of Directors, and as a member of the VCC's Policy Committee, I am committed to being a voice on behalf of our members to all levels of government. I am proud of what the Policy Committee has accomplished in a short time. As a member of the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce, you can be rest assured that businesses in Vaughan ARE being served and spotlighted at the national level through this type of work. Til next month,
Michael Manett Chairman of the Board of Directors

Don't Underestimate the Importance of Healthy Air
The need for clean air in our homes should not be underestimated as Canadians spend an average of 90% of their time indoors. Our homes contain many substances that are hazardous to our health. Indoor air pollutants range from minor irritants such as dust and animal dander, to major irritants such as molds and chemical vapours that may be emitted from building materials and furnishings. It is important to be aware of how air contaminants can affect our health and to adopt corrective measures that will improve indoor air quality in our homes.
