October 2011

Dear Members:

As September ends and October blows in, I realize what a stunningly busy month this has been. VCC President & CEO Deborah Bonk Greenwood and I had the honour of attending the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Conference where we played a significant role in national policy direction to the federal government. Some of the key Policy Resolutions that were approved include:
- Extending tax relief for small businesses;
- Improving consumer choice: removing inter-provincial trade barriers to sales of 100% wine;
- Reducing red tape and the administrative burden on SMEs;
- Improving the accuracy and timelines of the Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) program
I would also like to offer my sincere congratulations to Debbie on her election to the Board of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and her subsequent appointment as Chair of CCEC. It's this kind of positive exposure that puts Vaughan in the forefront representing our businesses on a national scale.
Exciting news! The VCC Policy Committee submitted a pre-budget consultation submission on the green energy industry to the Federal Finance Standing Committee for approval. After careful review, the submission was accepted. On October 31, 2011, the VCC Policy Committee will present this submission in Toronto to the Finance Standing Committee. Just one more thing the Vaughan Chamber is doing on your behalf!
September also saw the VCC holding a successful provincial election debate on September 22. Today is Election day ... I urge everyone to vote.
October will be busy and exciting. By popular demand, we will be holding a Networking Breakfast Event on Tuesday, October 18 in support of Small Business Week. We will also be launching our brand-new and exciting "Business - Keeping You Connected" e-Zine, with our first issue featuring "Women in Business"! Keep your eyes open for this slick new venture, arriving in your email inbox before October 21.
And finally, don't forget the 2nd Annual Women to Women Event, happening on Wednesday, November 2nd. We already have a healthy and growing registration list for this event, so don't miss your opportunity to network with your fellow Vaughan business women and men, and hear some great speakers, including Dr. Natasha Turner, ND. Find information on these and more events further down this newsletter.
Here's to a happy Thanksgiving and a successful Small Business Week for all Vaughan businesses!
Sincerely,
Michael Manett Chairman of the Board of Directors
