2011 has definitely started with a bang!  The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce has been phenomenally busy with high profile events this past month ... events such as the Julian Fantino Budget Consultation Breakfast on January 28, 2011.  The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Vaughan Business Enterprise Centre to bring you this unique event.  Minister Fantino was looking for our input on issues such as jobs and innovation in Vaughan; retirement savings plans for Small Business; and efficiency of government.  Through this event, you were able to make your voice heard through the round table discussions that took place.  The Vaughan Chamber's Policy Committee was heavily involved with the planning of this event and the feedback from the large group that attended was overwhelmingly positive.

 

Deborah Bonk (CEO) and I as the Chair of the Vaughan Chamber, also received exclusive invitations to attend the Monday, January 31st official release of the "Seventh Report for Canadians on the Implementation of the Economic Action Plan" from Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Minister Julian Fantino.  It is clear that the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce is being asked to attend such events in recognition of the fact that we have valuable input to provide to all levels of government.  It proves that the input from the business community in Vaughan on important matters such as the budget and the economy is valued and reinforces the fact that the Chamber is the voice of business in Vaughan and as such, we are encouraged to express the views of business to government at all levels.

 

The result of all of this is that once again, we can reiterate the value of your Chamber membership.  It is YOUR voice that is heard within the municipal and federal governments through these strong working relationships. The collaborations and partnerships that we are working towards solidifying can only serve to improve your business's bottom line.  Your involvement with the Chamber, be it through attending events or volunteering your time on one of our committees, can only serve to make your business stronger.  I encourage you to be a part of this new wave of cooperation.

Free Networking Sessions 

New initiative from the Vaughan Chamber!    

The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce will continue to offer free "networking only" sessions to our members!  Our next session will be held on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Vaughan Chamber offices from 7:30am until 9:00am. No pre-registration is necessary! Simply drop in and introduce yourself to your fellow Chamber members!

The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce is officially accepting nominations for the 2011 Board of Directors. If you are interested in running for election to the Board, nominations are due by 4:30pm Monday, February 28, 2011.

Please note: At this point, the deadline for your nomination to be considered by the Vaughan Chamber's Nominating Committee is over, but you can still submit a nomination up until February 28, 2011. However, it will not be reviewed by the Nominating Committee.

Peer to Peer Mentoring  
New Sessions Starting!   


The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce is wrapping up its first Peer Mentoring session, and will soon be launching a second session. Andy Hewitson of Hewitson Managment Solutions, Inc. has this to say about his Vaughan Chamber Mentoring experience:

"When the Vaughan Chamber offered the opportunity to participate in the new VCCBA Peer-to-Peer Mentoring program, I jumped at the chance. As a small business owner, the opportunity to compare notes, trade experiences and receive support from fellow business owners was simply too good to pass up. The experience has been excellent, the people I have met very interesting and supportive, and the expert facilitators helpful and forthcoming. The Aging Workforce Stakeholder Conference will be held on Feb. 22, 2011 at Le Parc in Markham. The event features an exciting line-up of speakers including break-out sessions and an expert café.  Presenters will interact with delegates and have built an agenda incorporating networking and lots of opportunities to ask questions. York Region economic stakeholders will hold a table top exhibit that runs throughout the day.
