Wine Tasting 101
The Chronicle OnlineDecember 2010
Dear Members:
Michael
November has been a month filled with key policy work for the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce!  As December starts, the City of Vaughan is ushering in a change in our City's government.  The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to working with his Worship Maurizio Bevilacqua and all of the City of Vaughan councillors, both new and returning, in the New Year.  I know we all have a common goal in promoting and improving business in the City of Vaughan.  I was honoured to attend the new Council Inauguration event on December 6th, along with Vaughan Chamber President & CEO Deborah Bonk Greenwood.  We are excited about this new era for Vaughan!

We are also excited about another governmental change for Vaughan - that of our new Member of Parliament, Julian Fantino.  Mr. Fantino won the federal by-election on November 29th in a close race. Mr. Fantino has always been a strong supporter of the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce, and we look forward to working with him closely, representing the businesses of Vaughan.

And of course, the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce was thrilled to receive a very special guest on November 19th - Laureen Harper, wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.  A savvy business woman in her own right, Mrs. Harper was part of a very special, invitation-only roundtable discussion featuring some of Vaughan's successful and driven business women.  The session was an eye-opener on a number of levels: for the few men around the table including myself, and for those of us who learned about how Mrs. Harper manages her own busy work and family schedule.

The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce will always endeavour to work closely with all our elected officials and ensure a strong working relationship to benefit the businesses of Vaughan.  I would like to close the year by wishing all of our members a very happy and healthy holiday season, and hopes for a prosperous New Year!

Sincerely,

Michael Manett
Chairman of the Board of Directors

A Message from the York Region United Way

The United Way of York Region is in the final weeks of its 2010 campaign.  United Way helps one in three people across our region, funding 100 programs delivered by 39 member agencies - many of them right here in Vaughan.  Every year, over 250 businesses across the Region and 18,000 donors join United Way to provide a helping hand to our neighbours in need.  Please consider a gift to United Way of York Region this year.  Your donation makes a difference:
*$100 provides 1 year of social support for 2 isolated seniors, helping reduce loneliness and keep them living at home safely;
*$350 provides 10 weeks of counseling for a child who has been sexually abused, the first step to rebuilding their self-esteem and managing anxiety;
* $1,100 provides 2 weeks of safe shelter to an abused mom and her children, giving them a chance to find new housing and hope.  Making a donation is as easy as clicking here.  And it changes lives.

Wine Tasting 101
Pointers from the experts!

Wine tasting or more accurately, 'wine evaluation' involves four of the five senses. Sight, smell, taste and touch. Much consternation surrounds the concept of wine tasting and evaluation. Quite simply however, each of us is fully 'equipped' to perform the task adequately-even those of us with very little in the way of wine knowledge or experience. Wine is of course a very subjective thing to begin with, however, with a little practice, some of its subjective aspects can begin to be assessed in a more objective manner.
