Dear Members:
This past month has been an exciting one for the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce! As "the voice of business in Vaughan", we have been active on both a municipal and a federal level, representing you, the businesses of Vaughan. As all of you know, the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce hosted an extremely well-attended Mayoral debate on Wednesday, September 29. The Vaughan Chamber's Policy Committee spent many months preparing for this event. It was our intention to ask the questions that those in the business community wanted asked. With that in mind, we encouraged input from our membership, asking what you felt were the top-of-mind business issues you wanted addressed and our panel put these questions to the candidates. The result was phenomenal and resulted in a spirited two-hour debate between Maurizio Bevilacqua, incumbent Mayor Linda Jackson and Mario Racco where they were put to the test of responding to the questions that you, the business people of Vaughan, wanted answers about, including transportation and infrastructure, business taxes and services provided, education, planning policy, improving City administration and services, power generation and supply, etc.
This month provided an opportunity for the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce to be actively involved with policy decisions on a national level as well. As the Vaughan Chamber Chair, I was fortunate to be able to attend the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting in Ottawa, along with Chamber CEO Deborah Bonk Greenwood. We were able to represent the interests of the business community of Vaughan on matters that are national in scope and must be presented to the federal Government. Click here to see the 2010 Proposed Policy Resolutions, and click here to see the results of the policy debates on September 26 and 27, 2010.
The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce continues to provide a strong voice for business in Vaughan, on federal, provincial, regional and municipal levels. Working together, we will become even stronger. I want to urge you to support the democratic process that we are fortunate to have in our City and this country, and make sure that you vote on Election Day, October 25th.
Sincerely,
Michael Manett Chairman of the Board of Directors |

Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM
Vaughan Well-Represented at Annual General Meeting
| | Chair Michael Manett voting in Policy resolution session. | Late last month, Vaughan Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Deborah Bonk Greenwood, and Chair Michael Manett attended the Canadian Chamber AGM to speak for the business interests of Vaughan at a national level. One of the issues hotly debated was that of the National Securities Regulator. Delegates to the AGM debated two resolutions in regards to the National Securities Regulator - one in favour of a single regulator and one opposed. Neither received the two-thirds majority required to be adopted as policy. Individual local and provincial chambers will continue to express their members' views either supporting or opposing a single regulator.Several common themes emerged from the discussion: 1. The regulation of Canada's securities system has been improved by the passport system. However, delegates believe more should be done to protect purchasers and to ensure greater regulatory coordination across Canada. 2. If the government decides to proceed with a single regulator, it must first have a clear statement from the courts that it has the constitutional authority to do so. 3. Important regional concerns exist in Canada that need to be addressed by the government. We believe it is possible to achieve significant improvements by working together. To read more about this, along with other policy resolutions that were debated on, please click here. |
Proposed EI Changes Defeated
Canadian Chamber President Perrin Beatty Issues Statement
Last month, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and its network across the country issued a resounding call to action in the wake of proposed changes to the Employment Insurance (EI) program, and plans to increase EI premiums by the maximum allowed under federal legislation. Our voice was heard. On September 29th, members of Parliament defeated Bill C-308 - a bill that would have added over $2 billion to the costs of the EI Program, increased work disincentives, hindered labour force mobility and constrained job creation. Subsequently, the government announced it will be scaling back planned increases in EI premiums. To read more from Canadian Chamber President & CEO Perrin Beatty, please click here. |

Vaughan Council Approves Official Plan
Will Go to Region of York for Final Approval Vaughan City Council has approved the City's new Official Plan, a comprehensive document that will guide sustainable growth and development in Vaughan to the year 2031. Approved Sept. 7, the Official Plan is the culmination of extensive planning and public consultation, and sets out the City's vision and major policy directions concerning the environment, employment, housing, cultural heritage, infrastructure, transportation and municipal services. The Plan represents a balanced approach to growth, with only a 3 per cent expansion in the City's urban boundary -- the smallest urban expansion in the City's history -- while approximately 40 per cent of Vaughan will remain protected as natural areas and countryside. The Plan will go next to the Region of York for consideration and final approval. For more information about the new Official Plan, click here. |

2011 National Work, Family & Lifestyle Study
This is your opportunity to participate
In 1990 and again in 2000, the research team from the Ivey Business School and the Sprott School of Management conducted a national survey on the extent to which employees and employers were able to balance the dual demands of work and family. These studies provided a comprehensive assessment of work and family demands and their impact on employees and organizations alike. The findings were unequivocal. Organizations that do not address these issues will face problems related to turnover, recruitment of younger workers, retention of older workers and succession planning. Your company is being offered the chance to participate in this national study. To learn more and to see how participating can benefit your company, please click here. |
Federal Government Launches New Business Committee
Committee to Advise Government on Small Business Growth The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), has announced the launch of a private sector committee to provide advice to the Government of Canada on a wide range of issues of importance to small and medium-sized businesses, such as reducing red tape and improving access to federal programs and information. The new committee will build on the work of the former Advisory Committee on Paperwork Burden Reduction, a public-private sector working group whose advice was instrumental in helping the Government of Canada achieve its goal of reducing the paperwork burden on small businesses by 20 percent.
