| The Chronicle Online | July 2010 |
Dear Members:
Being Chair of the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce gives me the responsibility of attending planning sessions and focus groups on your behalf, the business community of Vaughan. I recently attended a "Visioning Session" regarding the new hospital to be built in Vaughan. In collaboration with Vaughan Health Campus Care, York Central Hospital has now taken on an expanded mandate to create a major regional health centre which features a two-site model for health care services in Southwest York Region including continued development of the existing hospital in Richmond Hill and development of a new hospital site in Vaughan. To kick off the planning process of this development project, the hospital held a "Future Thinking and Breakthrough Visioning Session" on June 3, 2010. I was invited to attend along with representatives from community organizations, government and health partners in Vaughan and Richmond Hill as well as York Central Hospital's board of directors and leadership team. The event was a forum to discuss how to best meet the health needs of our growing community through the hospital expansion and partnership with community health care providers. Key areas of focus arising from this session included: Access to Care; Service Integration and Partnership; Information Technology; Health Promotion; and Innovation. To see a detailed breakdown of feedback collected, please click here.
The Visioning Session has resulted in a draft unified project vision that will start off extensive community engagement activities over the coming months. During that time, York Central Hospital will be conducting a comprehensive community engagement process to ensure that as many people as possible are able to contribute their thoughts and ideas on how best to meet the health care needs of all residents of Southwest York Region. As always, the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce will be involved in the process, representing you and ensuring the voice of the business community is heard. If you have any input that you wish to provide to this process, please let us know at the Chamber. We want your input in order to properly represent the views of the business community on important matters such as this.
Sincerely,
Michael Manett Chairman of the Board of Directors |

G20: Making the Canadian Business Voice Heard
As the leaders of the G20 gathered in Toronto for their summit on June 26, 2010, a smaller group representing the business communities of the G20 countries also met to offer their advice on the issues on the leaders' agenda. The B20 group, as the business meeting was called, was comprised of about forty CEOs and heads of business associations who had been selected by their governments to serve as a sounding board in advance of the leaders' meetings. Perrin Beatty, President & CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, offers his reflections on the successes and the challenges. Please click here to read more. |

Is "Just Cause" Dismissal a Lost Cause?
Many employers consider the notice of "just cause" for dismissal to be a "lost cause". While just cause may be hard to prove, courts and arbitrators will agree that dismissal is warranted in the right circumstances. However, the economic reality of litigation is such that in many cases, it may be more cost-effective to settle, even if that involves paying some money, rather than proceeding to trial and winning.
