New HST "Place of Supply" Rules Revealed
Businesses selling goods and services in Canada may need to change their systems and processes for collecting tax on their sales following the Department of Finance's release on February 25, 2010 of significant proposed changes to the harmonized sales tax (HST) "place of supply" rules. Finance also released expanded self-assessment and rebate rules relating to the provincial component of the HST. These revised rules will affect many GST-registered Canadian and international companies. To read more about this and the possible impact, please click here. |
Public Open House on the TTC Subway Extension to Vaughan
The Toronto Transit Commission invites you to a Public Open House on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 to view the preliminary design concepts for the Vaughan Corporate Centre Subway Station, the Highway 407 Station and the Steeles West Station. A second Public Open House, featuring detailed architectural concepts will be held for these stations in the Spring/Summer of 2010. Chamber Member Smart Commute Receives Eco-Friendly Business Award!
Amidst Toronto's most cycling savvy businesses, Smart Commute - North Toronto, Vaughan (NTV) has been recognized as Toronto's Bicycle-Friendliest Suburban Business for 2009. The not-for-profit received the award at the recent Bicycle Friendly Business Awards (BFBA), which recognizes an organization's commitment to the advancement of cycling as a sustainable, cost-effective and healthy mode of commuting.

Canada Revenue Agency Warning Canadians of a Tax Scam
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is warning taxpayers to beware of a recent scam where some Canadians are receiving a letter fraudulently identified as coming from the CRA and asking for personal information. The letter is not from the CRA. The letter claims that there is "insufficient information" for the individual's tax return and that in order to receive any "claims," they will have to update their records. The letter attaches a form specifically requesting the individual's personal information in writing, via fax or email, including information on bank accounts and passports.
