Committee Corner

In the September newsletter, we reported that the Policy Committee conducted a survey to gather your input with regard to what issues you felt the Chamber should be advocating for on your behalf.

The results are in and the top three issues the Committee will be focussing on over the next year are:

1.    Economic Development
2.    Municipal Accountability and Ethics
3.    Infrastructure (including traffic congestion, road repairs, bridges, sewers etc...)

The Committee would like to thank all of the members who completed the survey and would like to congratulate David Bernstein of Product Photo Inc. who won the draw for the $50 gift certificate to Wendel Clark's for participating in the survey.

Ontario Chamber of Commerce Supports Sales Tax Reform

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce, along with the Canadian Chamber and a number of other business organizations, have formed a non-partisan coalition of leaders from the business community to demonstrate the broad-based support for sales tax reform in Ontario. For more on this alliance and the positive impacts of a single sales tax, please click here.

For more information on the proposed HST, please click here to visit the Ontario Ministry of Revenue website. You can find out what tax benefits your business would be eligible for with the business tax savings calculator.  Learn how the PST and GST affect your business and how the proposed HST would work by attending a free tax information seminar.  You can also find information and resources specifically for small businesses as well as larger corporations.

The Economy's Slow Climb

One year after the collapse of the global economy, some experts believe the worst is over. The International Monetary Fund declared the recession over on Aug. 19, 2009, but warned the recovery would be sluggish. For an illuminating look at how some sectors were doing a year or more ago, and how they are doing now, please click here.
How TFSAs Can Help Small Business

While Canadian investors are flocking to tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs), many small business owners are still not aware of all the benefits that these registered accounts have to offer, for themselves and for their employees, experts say.  In fact, TFSAs can be a flexible and viable way to start a new business, help keep one going, fund a business owner's retirement, or even be a good way for employees of publicly traded companies buy shares.
Please click here to read more on how TFSAs can help you.
Government of Canada Plans Further Tariff Reductions To Benefit Canadian Business

Federal Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty has announced public consultations on the Government's intention to eliminate all remaining tariffs on imported machinery and equipment and manufacturing inputs used by Canadian industry. The consultations will run until November 6. The consultations are a follow-up to commitments made in Budget 2009 to identify additional areas where tariff relief could be provided. The tariff relief under consideration would benefit a broad range of manufacturing industries.  To read more on this encouraging news, please click here.
