The Chronicle Online May 2009
Dear Members,
 gerald searles
I have participated in some exciting events in the last three weeks.

First was  the 20th Annual Vaughan Chamber of Commerce Business Achievent Awards. Having previously watched this event from the sidelines, I did not fully appreciate the planning and logistics required to pull off this premier event to honour the cross section of Vaughan's most creative and viable businesses. One would not guess that business is continuing as usual inVaughan, especially if you are using print or TV as your source of information. Attending  an event like this one, and talking with people who speak the same language, puts a new spin on your view of business. Without any bias, I need to say that this event should be used in the future, as an indicator of what is possible.

The second event was the annual "Lets Talk Exports" luncheon featuring EDC's Vice President and Chief Economist Peter Hall. I went to this function predisposed to believing the report would be doom and gloom. Pleased to say I was wrong. To be fair, all was not rosy, however, as Peter walked us through cause and effect of our current national business situation, it became apparent that he and his colleagues were on the mark with what they predicted for 2008. Not to say that your CFO should bet the company's holdings on Peter's every prediction. It is imperative that those charged with evaluating the marketplace ( and therfore their own company's performance ) make the time to listen and question what the professionals have to say. Since becoming one of the converted, I can highly recommend using this forum for some insightful and valuable information which was presented in a clear and logical way.

The third and most exciting even I attended was the graduation of our son from St. Frances Xavier University, with a degree emphasizing business administration. Note: I said business. It would be nice to believe that I had some influence. Truth be known, he listens to his mother. There were approximately five hundred young professionals convocated that day. Some moving toward the teaching arts, and others, like our son, who will migrate into the business community.  He did the work, and we are more than proud. Nice to know that there is a newly minted group of highly educated taxpayers, who will ,in some cases, generate the next round of business activity across the country. I like to remind our son; his new purpose is to make money, pay taxes, and look after the baby-boomers ( of which I am one )! Job well done.

Sincerely,
Gerald K Searles
Chairman of the Board of Directors
