Dear Members,
 gerald searles
How do you define good character?  Is it by what a person says or by what they do? Possibly by their intent? Or, is your opinion developed by what others perceive to be true?

The easy answer is yes to all of the above. We find ouselves in an ever shifting landscape of moving targets. What is appropriate one day, does not fit the mould the next.  A casual remark one day becomes a liability a week later.  A decision made with one set of criteria on Monday suddenly turns into a quagmire with new information on Tuesday.  As business people, we have all been there. Being able to effectively draw conclusions is what most of our daily lives are all about.

At our AGM on March 30th, I had the good fortune to be re-elected for another term on the Board of Directors. As your Chair, I would ask that you provide me with the benefit of your feedback so that I can effectively draw conclusions on your behalf.  As valued members, you are the Chamber and without your input, we cannot make effective decisions.

The Chamber has had an exciting first quarter with great events and fantastic participation from you.  I ask that you continue to develop your business by continuing to support your Chamber through your ongoing participation.  We have a number of events and opportunities upcoming. I invite you to read on for details...

Sincerely,
Gerald K Searles
Chairman of the Board of Directors

Name the New City Centre Contest

The City of Vaughan has launched a public contest to give the planned downtown area a new name that captures the spirit of the City.  More than $1,000 of prizes will go to the winning entry. Plus, the winner will also go down in Vaughan's history by having a park bench named after them in the new city centre!

The downtown development will stretch along Highway 7 and be centred around Jane Street. This area will be developed to offer all the amenities of an urban lifestyle, including mixed-use residential and commercial buildings. This ambitious undertaking will not only drive economic activity and increase employment numbers within the area, it will encourage residents and businesses to think local; work, shop, dine and have fun in Vaughan's city centre.

The city centre needs a great name that captures the energy, the excitement, our strong sense of community. Take a moment and craft up a great name that will identify the "heart and soul" of our community.  Visit www.vaughan.ca for complete details.
Greater Toronto Region Economic Summit

The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be participating in the Greater Toronto Region Economic Summit on May 7, 2009.  Co Chairs for the event are Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga and John Honderich, incoming Chair of Torstar.

Never before have leaders from private business, institutions, labour, financial services and all three levels of government come together to develop an economic strategy aimed at strengthening and reviving the Greater Toronto Region.  For further information, visit the website.
