The Chronicle Online January 2009
Dear Members,
 gerald searles
It is 2009, and what the year will bring is a matter of perception.

For some in business, Q4 of 2008 was the worst in past history. For others the best. Half full or half empty?

We have some exciting times ahead -  the inauguration the 44th President of the United States, a Conservative Canadian minority government, and a new Liberal leader in Michael Ignatieff. We have some challenging times ahead - the bank meltdown in the US, real estate declines in Canada and the US, downward spiral in consumer purchasing, wars in Afganistan and Gaza and an ailing auto industry impacting heavily on secondary dependant businesses. Half full or half empty?

Canadians, particularly Ontarians, have the opportunity to capitalize on emerging technologies. We have an educated workforce, a credit system in excellent shape ( although lending is tight ) and we have a federal government who needs to stimulate the economy.

The businesses in Vaughan are innovative and noted for being on the leading edge when it comes to production, R&D, and tourism. All of us benefit when the business community is successful and thriving. It is these businesses which provide the essential tax base which makes the "City above Toronto" a great place to work and live.

I believe that we are starting 2009 with a list of opportunities. What we make of the opportunities presented to us will determine whether there will be hand wringing in December.

Please know that the Chamber, YOUR Chamber, is available to assist you in forward planning. If you require expertise that you currently do not have, we can help you access it. Make us aware of your needs and we can support you in ensuring your business success in 2009.

Starting today, I sincerely wish the "half full" adherents a prosperous year.

Sincerely,
Gerald K Searles
Chairman of the Board of Directors

Funding for Manufacturers
SMART Sessions Sponsored by the CME

Thanks to funding provided by the Government of Ontario, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) has created the SMART Program to help small and medium-sized manufacturers in Ontario improve their manufacturing productivity to enable them to compete more effectively in the global economy.
We're looking for manufacturing productivity improvement projects that include lean manufacturing, quality improvement, energy efficiency, IT best practices, and environmental impact reduction. Funds being asked for any capital equipment must be going into the facility that has made the application. We'll support the best projects proposed to us, only available up to 50% of project costs or $50,000, whichever is less.

An information session is being held:

January 20, 2009
7:30 AM - 11:00 AM
Hilton Garden Inn
3201 Highaway 7
Toscana Room

Performance Reviews Made Simple

It's that time of year again. You've got to add performance reviews to your already overloaded schedule. Even the best managers find it hard to break from their routines to review the effectiveness of their staff in meeting goals and priorities. The annual review should not be the annual dump of the good, the bad and the ugly on the employee...
