Dear
We usually only send our Clinician's Bulletin once per month, but we think this one is important. First of all, it's WOC Nurse Week, and we can't let the occasion pass without comment. Many of our subscribers are WOC Nurses, and we want to take a moment to thank you sincerely for all you do. It is your expertise that not only fuels the essential work of treating and preventing wounds, but also drives the research that allows us to teach others the best way of doing so.
That's why we're doing something a little different with this Bulletin. Usually, we link to a clinical article or paper that has something to do with a facet of wound care or pressure ulcers. This time, though, in honor of WOC Nurse Week, we're attaching two related articles. The first, you may have seen. It's Laura Bolton's remarkable "Wound-Healing Outcomes Using Standardized Assessment and Care in Clinical Practice" from several years ago. But just as remarkable was the follow-up commentary later simply titled "The Value of a WOCN." That gets to the heart of what we try to say every month. Read both papers, you'll be glad you did.
We at DM Systems are looking for clinicians who'd like to contribute some of their expertise to this kind of research. Take our short survey if you're thinking of doing some research of your own. Finally, we'd be remiss if we didn't invite you one more time to see us at the SAWC Spring conference in Atlanta later this month. We'll be in booth #924. We hope to see you there.
Questions? We love to hear your feedback. E-mail me at
Sincerely, Denis B. Drennan, MD President, DM Systems Inc.

Wound-Healing Outcomes Using Standardized Assessment and Care in Clinical Practice

Scheurich, RN, CRNI, CWOCN; Ron Shannon, MPH; and Michelle Toth, BA

Wound-healing outcomes applying standardized protocols have typically been measured within controlled clinical trials, not natural settings. Standardized protocols of wound care have been validated for clinical use, creating an opportunity to measure the resulting outcomes.
