Dear It's a fact that bears repeating: more than one million people develop pressure ulcers every year in the US. The ability to prevent and treat pressure ulcers is vital to the success of patient care. The first component of that treatment and prevention plan is assessment. That's why this month, we're sending along the article linked to the right, "Incidence of Hospital-Acquired Pressure Ulcers in Acute Care Using Two Different Risk Assessment Scales: Results of a Retrospective Study," a look at the use of both the Braden Scale and the Skin Scoring Test. We think you'll find the article informative and useful. With that in mind, come see us at Booth 224 at the 43rd WOCN Annual Conference . We'll be there, showing our new HeelSafe™ DVT Hose, our new ankle foot orthosis, the Heelift® AFO, and of course the Heelift® Suspension Boot. Pick up a Sample Request Form, so you can see for yourself how DM Systems helps your patients.
Can't make it to New Orleans? Visit our website, where you'll find more clinical papers, our Heelift Savings Calculator, and more. Many of you are receiving the Clinician's Bulletin for the first time this month, as a result of an invitation to subscribe we recently sent. We want to welcome you, and let you know we value your feedback and comments on the content we send out. You can send feedback simply by replying to this e-mail. Do you know a colleague that would find this newsletter useful? Use the "Forward e-mail" link below, and they'll have an opportunity to subscribe. Sincerely, Denis B. Drennan, MD President, DM Systems Inc.

Incidence of Hospital-Acquired Pressure Ulcers in Acute Care Using Two Different Risk Assessment Scales: Results of a Retrospective Study
Stephanie Smith Jackson, DNP, RN, ACNS-BC

The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the incidence of HAPUs between two 1-year periods of time at an acute care facility. Records from all admitted adult medical-surgical and critical care patients along with routinely submitted quality control reports on patients who acquired PUs during hospitalization were reviewed and abstracted. A locally developed PU risk assessment instrument was used during the first time period and the Braden Scale was used during the second time period.
