Boy gives rather than receives for 10th birthday

Grayson BarnesGrayson Barnes is a precocious boy who loves to read. So, instead of celebrating his 10th birthday with a party filled with lots of gifts, Grayson asked his friends to bring a new book to donate to the Steele Center.

"It was difficult at first, because I like getting presents," said Grayson. "But I knew I wanted to do something for others and I can't imagine being a kid and not having a book to call my own, so giving up birthday presents became easy when I saw all the books we could give to other kids."  Read more...
Steele Center participates in Tucson Festival of Books

Tucson Festival of BooksThe first annual Tucson Festival of Books held this past weekend on the UA Mall was nothing short of  amazing, with approximately 30,000 people attending! The Steele Center was proud to participate. UMC offered us space within the Diamond Children's booth, so we were able to talk to visitors about the Steele Center and Diamond Children's Medical Center.

Special thanks go to our wonderful volunteer group, the  Arizona Elks Major Projects, who generously donated hundreds of stuffed animals that we gave to children as "Reading Buddies." The kids loved them!

We thank all who volunteered at our table and those who visited us!

Steele Center inaugural "Meet and Treat" event a big success
Meet and Treat event

The first "Meet and Treat" event held in February was a great success! The kick-off gathering was organized by Steele Center advisory board members Andrea Malis and Beth Koontz. Approximately 45 people gathered at the home of Andrea and Gary Malis to learn more about the Steele Center.

Guests were introduced to Steele Center pediatricians and pediatric specialists and learned about our research and services. Guests entered a raffle for babysitting time donated by women from the UA Chi Omega and Gamma Phi Beta sororities, who also attended the Meet and Treat. Delicious Indian cuisine was donated by the restaurant Saffron, and guests were able to bid on beautiful photography donated by LyraLyra. The event raised $735.

"We're very excited about the Meet and Treat," said Koontz. "This was the first of many events we're going to organize to raise awareness within the Tucson community about the Steele Center."

If you are interested in joining the grassroots effort to raise awareness about the Steele Center, please email Andrea or Beth at: steeleawareness@gmail.com.
