Spotlight on Research: Murray Brilliant, PhD Making Futures Brighter: Correcting Albinism
 Steele Center researcher and professor Murray Brilliant, PhD, is a geneticist interested in albinism. Dr.
Brilliant's laboratory is currently working on a method to restore normal gene
function in the pigmented tissues of the albino eye.This method will exploit
the cell's endogenous DNA repair mechanisms. Most people with albinism have two
different mutations on their two different DNA strands. By cutting the DNA at a specific sequence
located between the two different mutation sites, the natural capacity to
repair the DNA can be harnessed resulting in strand switching in a significant

Kudos! Pediatric Cardiologist and Steele Center Researcher Dr. Scott Klewer Elected UMC Chief of Staff
 Pediatric cardiologist Scott Klewer, MD has been elected to a two-year term as Chief of Staff at University Medical Center. The appointment took effect Jan. 1. Dr. Klewer will be the chief
administrative officer for the more than 700 university and community
physicians who practice at UMC. He also will serve as chairman of the
hospital's Medical Executive Committee. Dr. Klewer's specialty is providing medical
care to children with heart problems, and his particular expertise is
in the non-invasive imaging of the heart. As a Steele Center researcher, Dr. Klewer investigates bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), the most common congenital heart defect. Read more...
