Department of Pediatrics Awarded $44 Million Contract to Participate in National Children's Study
The
UA Department of Pediatrics has been awarded a $44 million, six-year contract
to participate in the National Institutes of Health's National Children's
Study, a major effort to investigate the interaction of genes and the environment
on children's health.
The UA will recruit individuals from Maricopa, Pinal
and Apache counties to participate in the study over the next six years.
When fully operational, the study
is expected to include 36 to 50 study centers in the planned 105 study
locations throughout the United
States.
The principal investigator for the UA portion of the study is
Fernando Martinez, MD, professor of pediatrics.
"I am convinced that this study, if successful, will be
remembered for years to come as one of the most important scientific
enterprises ever started regarding children's health," Dr. Martinez said.

UA Department of Pediatrics and Faculty Honored with Prestigious Teaching Awards Congratulations to the Department of Pediatrics and faculty who were honored at the 29th Annual College of Medicine Faculty Teaching Awards and the Vernon and Virginia Furrow Awards, held on November 13, 2008. Outstanding Achievement in Teaching by a Clerkship or Elective: Department of Pediatrics
Out of 14 departments within the College of Medicine, third and fourth year medical
students chose Pediatrics as the best department for teaching. This is a great
testament to our faculty's commitment to teaching!
Educator of the Year: Sean P. Elliott, MD, Associate Professor, Clinical Pediatrics Dr. Elliott is in the section of Infectious Diseases. Excellence in Clinical Science Teaching for Medical Students:Tracey Kurtzman, MD, Assistant Professor, Clinical Pediatrics Dr. Kurtzman is in the section of General Pediatrics. Dean's List for Excellence in Teaching: William A. Madden, MD, Associate Professor, Clinical Pediatrics Dr. Madden is in the section of General Pediatrics.

November 16, 2008 The Art Institute of Tucson/Tee Up For Tots "Runway for Research" Fashion Show The second annual fashion show with Steele Center pediatric cancer patients modeling clothes designed by students from the Art Institute of Tucson, accompanied by their doctors was a great success! October 10-11, 2008 "Raise A Racquet for Kids" raised approximately $50,000 for pediatric cancer research through its tennis tournament, dinner and silent and live auctions!
