Faculty Spotlight - Sandy Buczynski
Sandy B - Disney Planet Challange

Dr. Buczynski served as a judge for Disney's Planet Challenge, a project-based, environmentally-focused national competition for 3rd-5th grade students and 6-8th grade students.  During the day, she read and evaluated projects that explored environmental issues integrating sound scientific understanding with math, English/language arts and even incorporated technology and the performing arts.  During the evening, she rode the Indiana Jones Adventure, Star Tours, Soarin' over California, and, of course, had a laugh with Mickey Mouse.  (Full disclosure:  She passed on the California Screamin' coaster!)  Did you know there is a free app for your iPhone that provides the current wait times for all Disneyland attractions?  (Disneyland Magic Guide app)

Dr. Buczynski said It was very refreshing to see how many K-8 learners are concerned about environmental issues and have really good ideas for solutions to some of these issues. The projects she judged focused on promoting awareness of environmental concerns and ways to prevent emerging environmental crises.  For the most part, the projects fostered critical thinking about the balance of environment, economic, and social perspectives. To view some of the project portfolios, go online and explore.

If you are a K-8 teacher, consider entering your class in this competition next year.  The grand prize is a trip for 40 students (and their teacher) to Disney World in Florida, however all participants receive certificates from Disney and a plaque for their classroom.
