MHVRP Spring Conference
Recognition Builds a Strong Volunteer Program

A Message from the President

Jacquie Karr-Zlotnicki, President

Hello MHVRP Members!

Is everyone adjusting to winter ... and our "new name," Michigan Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals? Soon it will roll off the tongue and hopefully help us in communicating the breadth of possible members we encourage to join our organization.

We have a new website, updated Google Groups, Facebook Page, and LinkedIn site! If you have not entered these sites, or need assistance, please contact us so that we can make sure you are able to access all of the tools available through your membership!

Speaking of membership, don't forget that our organization is intended to support all volunteer resource professionals in the healthcare industry. If your health system has long-term care, skilled nursing, homecare, hospice, rehab, cancer treatment centers, etc., where volunteers are being utilized, reach out to those who manage those volunteers to come to a REGIONAL MEETING. Our best opportunity to grow is by reaching out to colleagues in our own community and letting them know the benefits of membership in MHVRP.

The board, particularly the education committee, has been working hard to make the upcoming Spring Conference at the Homestead, featuring Colleen Sweeney, May 16-18, a huge success. In addition to the exciting educational opportunities and networking this conference will bring for just $115, let us not forget that this is the 40th anniversary of our group and everyone attending will receive a gift: a black track jacket with our NEW logo embroidered on it.

May your winter be wonderful and your spring come sooner than expected! Thank you for continuing your membership with us, and we look forward to seeing you all in May!

Most sincerely,

Jacquie Karr-Zlotnicki, DVS

President - MHVRP (2011-2012)

Our Google Group address has also been changed to mhvrp@googlegroups.com for any time you'd like to send a message to all members of MHVRP.  If you have a question for the board, please send it to our new board e-mail address: mhvrp1@gmail.com

2012 Program Resource Exchange

Back by popular demand, we are now surveying all MHVRP members regarding what volunteer programs you currently have in place at your hospital.  These results will be shared with all members late winter/early spring.  Our goal is 100% participation!  Members have commented that this survey is a valuable tool for when you're starting a new program at your hospital.  By checking the results of the survey, you'll be able to see who else already has a similar program and get in touch with them to ask questions.  Your input is what makes this a valuable tool.  Please take a few minutes to complete the survey here:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QF2KH97

If you have any questions, please contact Rachael Rosas at rrosas@stmarysofmichigan.org.  Thank you!

The Homestead

Celebrate our organization's 40th anniversary at the 2012 MHVRP Spring Conference in Northern Michigan. This annual event will provide healthcare volunteer resource professionals the opportunity to think differently about their delivery of care and what is most important to the patient.  While enjoying a resort nestled among the Sleeping Bear Dunes, recently named "America's Most Beautiful Place" according to ABC's Good Morning America, you can connect with peers in the field, learn best practices, and network with a variety of vendors. Earn education contact hours to maintain your CAVS designation.

About the Conference Speaker

With more than 30 years of healthcare experience, Colleen Sweeney, RN, BS, is a certified facilitator with the Tom Peters Company and member of the National Speakers Association. Sweeney is on a mission to transform healthcare one care giver at a time. Although she holds a degree in nursing, business and a masters certification in project management, she still attributes most of her success to an earlier career in improvisational comedy. This experience taught her to build enthusiasm, think differently about the work she does, and pull audiences into the power of possibility within themselves.

Sweeney conducted a three year study about patient fears during hospitalization, which makes her the nation's thought leader in truly patient-centered care. She found that getting inside the patient's head and having care providers grasp the effect of what is said and done to the patient is the key to patient compliance and loyalty. Knowing 96 percent of all patients have serious concerns or fears about  their hospitalization that need to be addressed immediately has been transformational for both the patient and the staff.

Under Sweeney's leadership, Memorial Hospital and Health System in South Bend, Indiana, was recently named among the top 100 hospitals in the nation and ranks in the top 10 percent for HCAHPS scores.

Sweeney was featured at the 2011 AHVRP Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Networking Opportunity

We are kicking off the conference with "Table Topics," a networking activity on Wednesday afternoon. Please send us any questions that you would like to ask your peers.  Email your questions to christie.carlson@spectrumhealth.org, and we'll do our best to address them during the activity.

Recognition Builds a Strong Volunteer Program

Brian Pegouske, Community and Resource Chair

It's the new year and time to reflect on the past year and set resolutions for the upcoming year! Why not resolve to spend more time recognizing your volunteers?  Many local communities and volunteer centers are now accepting award nominations for volunteers for the past year.  I know many volunteer professionals are constrained by time and the many things that happen each day.  Others do not want to single out volunteers.  The simple act of nominating make volunteers feel great even if they do not win.  It also raises the awareness of your volunteer program in the community.  Often you can nominate groups as well as individuals.

If you look at the many opportunities to nominate volunteers throughout the year, you will be able to spread around nominations and get a chance to recognize more volunteers.  Why not work with a local paper to create a spotlight on volunteers?  You can nominate for the Governor's Service Awards in the fall, and HandsOn.org recognizes a volunteer of the day each day and often sends information on other volunteer awards throughout the year.  The recognition helps build a stronger volunteer program and helps to get the word out on the great things your volunteers do every day.  So set a resolution today to nominate your volunteers.

MHVRP Photo Library Now Available
After the last newsletter, some of our membership responded that they did not have Facebook or were unable to access it from their work. They still wanted to be able to see photos from conferences, education days, etc. We created a Picasa Photo Library that will have the same pictures that we post on Facebook. To view the pictures, go to MHVRP Web Gallery. If you have pictures from past educational days or conferences that you would like to share, please email Sarah Knochel, sknochel@chs-mi.com.
