 A Message from the President
 Cindi McPherson, CAVS, President

Karol Pokley
August is always a reluctant time of year -- the ending of summer and beginning of fall, both of which are my two favorite times of the year.  However this year, I am not sure I want to let summer go!

September will start a busy time of the year for most of us.  We are planning an MCDVS Fall Education Day to be held at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing on October 12.  It will be a full day of learning, refreshing and putting new ideas to use when we return our offices.  And, as always, great networking among all of us.  I hope to see everyone there.  Please read the article below for more details on this event.

The MCDVS Board Retreat was held at St. Ives Golf Resort in Stanton, Michigan.  Your board spent the day hard at work and generated many new ideas!  I am very excited to put these ideas to work over the next nine months.

Please feel free to contact me at any time by phone, 616.772.7581, or e-mail at cmcpherson@zch.org
Fall Education Day - Save the Date!
 Tuesday, October 12, 2010
 Ingham Regional Medical Center
 Jacquie Karr-Zlotnicki, Education Chair

We are pleased to announce our plans to hold the Second Annual "Fall Education Day" for our MCDVS members this year!  We have reviewed the feedback from last fall's education day, as well as from the spring conference, to come up with an agenda we think everyone will find beneficial.

Our topics focus on the use of technology to communicate with volunteers and the communities that we serve.  We have a guest speaker who will define social media -- how to use it, how NOT to use it,  and also demonstrate it while having open, interactive discussions with our group.  This will include Facebook (groups, fan pages, other), Twitter, and other on-line ways of communicating within our own organization, with our volunteers, with our vendors, and with the public.

MCDVS's goal is to be able to offer networking and education to all members throughout the entire year.  Regional meetings are a vital way to share problems, solutions, ideas and fellowship without much expense.

I am very happy to announce your MCDVS regional facilitators for 2010-2011, who will host regional meetings primarily this winter and next summer.

 Reaching Teen Volunteers
 from VolunteerToday.com

"In the day and age of multi-media; newspapers, radio, Twitter, TV, billboards, etc it is essential to have a plan to attract specific audiences to volunteering. Reaching teenagers is more than putting up a poster at the local high school."

Group E-Mail
We hope you are enjoying access to the new Google Group e-mail system.  Please remember, you can send an e-mail to all MCDVS members by e-mailing mcdvs@googlegroups.com.  If you've moved forward with creating a Google account you may also visit the bulletin board where our Google Group communications are being posted for future reference:  groups.google.com/group/mcdvs.  If you need help setting up an account with Google in order to view that web page, please contact Rachael Rosas and she'd be happy to help you.

Sharing Resources
One of the things that we find most helpful about being a MCDVS member is the sharing of resources with one another.  Over the next year, we will be developing an updated library of documents on our website.  It's in the beginning stages at this point, but take a look at it on our website.  Log into the "Members Only" page with our shared username:  mcdvs and the current password:  kjp09 and you will see a new "link" on the navigation bar to the left that says "Documents."

We intend to organize these documents into categories to make it easier to look through and find what you need.  If you have policies, documents, or programs you feel are exceptional tools for managing a volunteer program, please e-mail them to rrosas@stmarysofmichigan.org or nancy.babcock@va.gov.   We look forward to providing avenues to help you create a program that will be a positive impact to your organization.
 7 Trends Altering Volunteer
 Recruitment & Recognition

from ArticlesBase.com

"Volunteer management means being aware of the trends in society affecting volunteering, volunteer recognition and volunteer recruitment. If you can see the trends that are happening around you, then you can see the future of volunteering."

 Membership Update
 Kathy Daly, Membership Chair

Most of our members have renewed...but, I'm still plugging away at some and I need your help, please.  Our MIA's are:  Lisa Beach, Marie Bristow, Nancy Carlisi, Stephanie Danehy, Fran Dombrowski, Ioan Duca, Julie Elliott, Pat Ezdebski, Pam Fogarty, Nancy Gorski, Sabrina Merrett, Deanna Robb, Betsy Schulte and Kim Zasa.  If you know any of these ladies, will you check on their status for MCDVS?  (I, too, will make one more attempt before printing the membership roster.)

I also sent out a 75-piece mailing to Hospice DVS's and have acquired one new member and two inquiries in the last week!  Remember...we are our best promoters.
