President's Message
President -- Karol Pokley, CAVS |
Thank you very much for the opportunity to attend the Association for Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals (AHVRP) conference in Phoenix, Arizona, this past August. I joined over 475 attendees in a four-day whirlwind tour of networking and informational opportunities!
There were professional speakers offering a wide variety of educational tracks, from program development, finance, advocacy, to retail operations and much more! Over 40 vendors packed display tables with popular items and eagerly discussed details of holding fundraising events. I gained valuable information that I plan to share with all of you in upcoming newsletters. If you would like to inquire about conference topics, visit the AHVRP website at: ahvrp@aha.org.
Those interested in attending an AHVRP conference in the future, next year's conference will be held September 30 - October 3, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri. |
President-Elect's Message
|
I thought I knew what HOT weather was until I attended the AHVRP Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. With temperatures over 110 degrees, it was a little overwhelming!
The AHRVP Conference was well worth dealing with the HEAT. As a first time attendee, I wanted to take in as much as I could and bring information back to our state membership. The networking really stands out for me, as I met so many wonderful DVS's from other states, and from both large and small healthcare facilities. I also realized how outstanding our state group is as far as the support we give one another when needed. As with any networking, it was a great time to talk to volunteer program leaders from other state healthcare facilities, and to learn what works and what does not. We all seem to be having the same issues/concerns during this time.
I attended sessions on 1) Volunteer Services Raises the Bar, Lifts Spirits and Expands Services; 2) Retain, Retrain and Attain Success - Gift Shop Volunteers; 3) Advancing Your Message: Increasing Your Visibility Using Plain Language; and 4) Building Quality and Excitement at the Same Time. I came away with new ideas, information and a renewed feeling for my position.
I truly appreciate the opportunity I was given to attend the AHVRP Conference. If you have any questions on the sessions that I attended, please feel free to call me at 616-772-7581 or e-mail me at cmcpherson@ZCH.org. |

Membership Update
|
The membership directory is ready and was distributed to everyone who attended the Education Day on September 22. The remainder of them will be mailed off to those of you who did not make the meeting.
My next goal is to work on increasing our membership. I'd like to encourage all my fellow "MCDVSers" to submit names and contact information to me for future members. Many of us know someone who should receive an invitation to our great organization.
We are at 104 members...together we can involve more people. Please email any suggestions to me at kdaly@trinity-health.org or call me at 231-728-4711. Thank you for your help in growing our organization. | |
