Only One MCDVS Educational Conference in '09 President -- Carol Bridges, CAVS |
Greetings!,
The following is a copy of an e-mail that you should have received the last week in January. I have received very many positive messages from members as a result of this communication. In case you did not receive it, I ask that you read it and share your thoughts with me or other board members. I also urge you to complete the survey that was sent out by Kristyn Ireland, our education chair. In case you missed it, here is the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=V4a_2f4mOgRVaJt8h5x_2f8O8Q_3d_3d
Dear MCDVS members,
During our most recent board meeting on January 22nd, we had a lengthy discussion about the economy and how it is impacting hospital finances across the state. Many DVS's, including a majority of board members, have told us that their hospital has put a hold on all travel expenses.
Keeping this in mind, the board made the decision to hold only one educational conference in 2009, the Spring Conference. Our Education Chair, Kristyn Ireland, will be sending out an e-mail soon with a survey and details. Please take a moment to quickly complete the online survey.
We are hoping that you will look at your budget and make a commitment to attend. The cost is minimal and the return is great. You cannot put a price on the education and networking available at our conferences.
In addition, we are looking at something new, a one day Fall event, to be held in Lansing, including a membership meeting.
Please know that the MCDVS budget remains lucrative with a healthy bottom line. With that in mind, we need to be proactive and make some temporary changes. Keep in mind that this is not a permanent change and we are trying to be responsive to your concerns regarding economic challenges. We welcome your input.
We ask you to strongly consider attending the Spring Conference, and thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Carol |
The Value of a National Conference
|
So just what does a national conference mean to you? Attending an Association of Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals (AHVRP) Conference is an unbelievable experience that can give you a whole new perspective on volunteer management. The variety of topics and professional speakers makes every session offered well worth your time. With hundreds of volunteer directors attending from all over the country, networking is at your fingertips at every turn. This year's conference will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, August 27-30. Check the AHVRP conference website for some of the topics to be presented. With our hospitals closely watching the bottomline, think about sharing a room to save on hotel costs. You may also want to check out "super saver" flights. If you do decide this conference is affordable, you will not be disappointed!

"Thanks for Giving" Awards |
Annually, just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, several Michigan Council of Directors of Volunteer Services (MCDVS) members jointly sponsor a "Thanks for Giving" event. This event honors volunteerism in Metropolitan Detroit healthcare facilities. Individual awardees are recognized for service in their respective healthcare facilities. One program is also selected to receive recognition as the Extraordinary Volunteer Program of the Year. Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center's Caring Companion Program was the recepient of this award during the event held on November 18, 2008. TV weatherman Chuck Gaidica served as Master of Ceremonies again this year.
