Commending Liberians for Change by Hillary Clinton

Photo: AP

In her speech on August 13, in Monrovia, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton commended Liberians for change and encouraged them to continue on. Secretary Clinton has made women's rights and women in leadership a priority of her foreign policy agenda.
"In just three years, there are encouraging signs of progress. Your nation has adopted sound fiscal policies with the support of this legislature. That was not easy, and it is noted around the world...Your president is working hard to build a competent and professional security sector, and all of Liberia can take pride in the fact that this nation now has free and compulsory education for primary school children, including your girls."

"Questions for Ellen Johnson Sirleaf,"
by Deborah Solomon
"'As the only female head of state in Africa, what did you think of the recent documentary “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,' which gives the women of Liberia complete credit for ending the country’s bloody civil war?
I have seen it, and I applaud the women who sat in the rain and sun promoting peace, advocating reconciliation and the end to the war. I say our country owes them a whole lot."

"Charles Taylor on Trial, Man of Peace, Man of War"

Photo: AP
"In a small courtroom on the upper floor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) building in The Hague, closed off to the public gallery behind thick glass, Charles Ghankay Taylor has spent the past month giving testimony in his trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity...It is the first time a former African head of state has been tried by an international court. So the Taylor case is a test not only for justice in Africa, but for international justice, too."
