Eco Friendly Parking Meters
The 40 new solar-powered parking meters accept all major debit and credit cards and coins. These are on Main and if you go to The Dayton City Paper you can use them. The trial meters have a two-cent per minute rate and are programmed wirelessly via a web browser. The software also provides detailed performance data on how frequently the meters are used, for what lengths of time, and during what periods of the day. Dayton is using the new meters on a 90-day trial basis.
It works on a quarter!!!!!
The Healthcare Movie on March 15th at the Dayton Metro Library Auditorium from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.on Thursday. This documentary provides the real story of how the health care systems in Canada and the United States evolved to be so completely different, when at one point they were essentially the same. Most people under the age of 50, in both countries, are not aware of the intensity of the political struggle that led to the universal medical care system in Canada. Nor are they aware of the public relations campaigns, still active today, that have been prevalent in the United States since the early 1900's to dissuade the public from supporting national health care.
The Dayton Gay Mens Chorus will be doing "The Directors Cut" and will be held at the Dayton Art Institute on Saturday March 17. Selections include Chicago, Steely Dan, Queen, and even some N'Sync, and so much more! The DGMC will of course be accompanied by Dayton own Rubi Girls throughout the evening, they are quite the draw to the public. Also throughout the evening the DGMC will offer a WIDE assortment of silent auction items from Keurig machines, Oakley Sunglasses, local art, gift cards for Webber Jewelers, food and wine from all over, hot air balloon rides, tickets to Carrie Fisher: Wishful Drinking at the Victoria, and so so much more!!

Dayton Ballet's Spring Serie kicks off a year long tribute to Dayton Ballet's 75th Anniversary Diamond Celebration season. A highlight of the production will be a classical ballet choreographed by Dayton Ballet company veteran, Justin Michael Koertgen, Hot Riffs and Blue Notes by Dayton favorite, Gregory Robinson, and a new piece by New Music New Dance competition winner Susanne Payne. Performances of The Spring Series are at the Victoria Theatre, March 15, 16, & 17 at 8 p.m., and March 17 and 18 at 3 p.m.

When Farmer Brown refuses to comply with their demands, the cows organize and go on strike. It's up to the farm's impartial duck to mediate their dispute! But this poor farmer's bovine troubles are not over yet! And this statue was the QWERTY for cows to practice!

The Dayton Art Institute will offer a rare glimpse into the world of 21st century Chinese fiber art, when it presents the special exhibition Changing Landscapes: Contemporary Chinese Fiber Art, on view March 24 - June 17.
Changing Landscapes is the first exhibition of contemporary Chinese fiber art to travel to the United States, and it features 45 works, created by 48 artists during the first decade of the 21st century. The Dayton Art Institute's showing is the only Midwestern stop for the exhibition, and its final U.S. engagement before returning to China.
In conjunction with Changing Landscapes, The Dayton Art Institute will display Maya Lin's installation piece Flow. Lin is best known for her design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

DVAC presents The Cline Show, an exhibition of bold new works by 17 art and design undergrads. Through the Cline Show program, art and design students are nominated by faculty from local colleges and universities. This year, DVAC visitors will enjoy prints, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, installation and video from students representing Sinclair Community College, University of Dayton and Wright State University.

It might be a good idea to block off Tuesday evenings this March and early April. Washington-Centerville Public Library in partnership with Hithergreen Center will host a series of programs on The Middle East by showcasing a different topic each evening, concluding with a panel discussion featuring most of the guest presenters. All sessions are from 7-8:30 pm and will be held at Hithergreen Center, 5900 Hithergreen Drive. The series schedule is as follows:
� March 27: Gender & Social Issues, presented by Dr. Ellen Fleischmann of the University of Dayton and Ms. Hadil Issa, a student at the University of Dayton;
� April 3: Land of Turmoil, presented by Dr. Liam Anderson of Wright State University; Mr. Bashir G. Ahmed from the Dayton International Peace Museum; and Rabbi David Sofian of Temple Israel;
� April 10: Future Prospects Panel Discussion, featuring most of the presenters of the series.

The March 20 Mid-Day Arts Cafe features a look at the past, present and future of The Zoot Theatre Company, Dayton's newest puppet and mask theatre company. Zoot's presentation will include Outreach Manager Dawn Roth-Smith, Resident Artist Gary Thompson and Artistic Director Tristan Cupp sharing the story of creating The Zoot Theatre Company, how it became a reality and what their vision is for the next five years. The team will be joined by a few of their puppets for display, and to present a short piece demonstrating their use.

PUSH Dayton (Professionals United for Sexual Health) are a local group of young professionals dedicated to raising funds to support Planned Parenthood and promoting sexual health. On March 31st, they will be holding an adult prom, Prom 'N Aid, at Club Aquarius starting at 8pm. Tickets are available before the event for $15. They will be $20 at the door. It should be a really fun night where people can dance the night away, enjoy food and drinks, and even have an opportunity to be crowned Prom King or Queen.

Reminiscent of the old Schantz Lookout Tower, Hills and Dales Lookout Tower has recently been completed on Southern boulevard south of the Patterson monument, overlooking the Community Country club. It was built by the boys of the National Youth administration, the work being done under the direction of Earl Shock, superintendent of the Community Country Club. It required a year to build, is constructed of stone salvaged by the city from condemned buildings, is 56 feet high to the peak of the roof and offers a view of 15 miles around. It is reached by 50 steps from the boulevard and 50 more steps from the entrance to the lookout platform. The walls are more than three feet thick in places. February 16, 1941 And Now... |
