Greetings!

Now that Labor Day has past and summer is winding down, it's time to get back to business!  Our "Business & Bagels" breakfast series has begun and we're looking forward to several other learning and networking events.  Congressman Dan Lipinski will be speaking at our next quarterly meeting sometime in November.  We're also looking forward to a joint speed networking event on October 19th.  This is a great opportunity to reach out and network with new people from surrounding areas.  Below are some informational clips of interest for your review.

The BPCIA Board of Directors would like to encourage our members to utilize the membership directory when looking for a service or product.  The directory is listed on our website,   www.bpcia.org or call our office for assistance.

Know Your Neighbor:  Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach

BPCIA is pleased to welcome Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach as our newest member.  Mission Outreach, founded by the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis in 2002, is a small, not-for-profit organization that recovers used medical equipment and surplus supplies from hospitals, corporations, and others, and responsibly redistributes them to needy hospitals and clinics in the developing world.

It is estimated that $6.5 billion worth of medical equipment and supplies are discarded in the U.S. each year.  By responsibly redistributing these items, Mission Outreach is helping to provide life-saving care to the poor throughout the world as well as diverting items from the waste stream.

Mission Outreach relies on volunteers to sort the donated supplies.  All of the supplies are boxed into boxes of like items, placed in an online inventory, and the recipient hospital or clinic can order what they need. They have sent 40-foot shipping containers loaded with equipment and supplies to over 50 countries - as close as Haiti and as far away as the Philippines.  In FY2010, 77 containers were shipped - 22 container equivalents went to Haiti in response to the earthquake.  Not only do they send 40-foot shipping containers, but they also provide supplies to medical mission teams for hand-carry.

Mission Outreach, with warehouse facilities in Springfield and Bedford Park, currently works with 50 hospital partners in Illinois and Wisconsin including Rush University Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Resurrection Health Care, Central DuPage Hospital, and the Provena Health System.

If you'd like to learn more about the Mission Outreach, volunteer opportunities, or to schedule a tour of their local facility, please contact Mary Ann Skvara at 708/496-3900.

Regional Planning discussed at Latest Quarterly Meeting

Randy Blankenhorn, Executive Director of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP)  spoke at our latest quarterly meeting.  He presented "GO TO 2040: Comprehensive Regional Planning + The Private Sector".

GO TO 2040 is the region's official comprehensive plan, intended to help the many communities of metropolitan Chicago face challenges that are strikingly similar but seldom identical. Implementing the plan's recommendations will help secure sustainable prosperity for this generation and for generations to come. The purpose of GO TO 2040 is to build on the region's assets, identify its shortcomings, and recommend actions that will help enhance and sustain the region's economic vitality and global competitiveness. Randy highlighted the advantages of comprehensive planning and gave a brief overview of how the GO TO 2040 plan is being implemented.  He focused on the workforce and economic innovation recommendations as these are of great importance to the region's business community.
