Harlem Avenue Corridor
Southwest Suburban Cook County Residents Urged to Help Redesign Harlem Avenue
The Southwest Conference of Mayors is asking the residents of southwest suburban Cook County to help redesign Harlem Avenue by participating in the creation of a new plan that will improve the transportation, economic and aesthetic character of the Harlem Avenue Corridor. The idea is to develop a roadway that brings a sense of continuity, improves traffic flow and serves the interests of the businesses and residents that line it.
The project, known as the Harlem Avenue Corridor Plan, has just launched a website, www.HarlemCorridor.com, where interested parties can learn more about the project and how to get involved. Beginning now until November 2011, residents will have several opportunities to voice their opinions and review the progress of the plan.
The project area runs from 63rd Street in Bedford Park on the north to I-80 in Tinley Park on the south. The project is a joint effort among the 10 municipalities within the project area along with state, regional and local transportation agencies. The 10 municipalities within the project area are: Bedford Park, Bridgeview, Burbank, Oak Lawn, Chicago Ridge, Palos Hills, Worth, Palos Heights, Orland Park, and Tinley Park.
Harlem Avenue is major transportation corridor for the southwest suburbs. It is a key route for a quarter million residents. It is a lifeline for local businesses and industries of varying kinds. It is also the route to major entertainment venues and recreation spots.
The plan aims to ease traffic, improve safety, enhance the appearance, and protect the natural elements. Ultimately the plan aims to improve the quality of life and property values by making Harlem Avenue a better place to visit/live/work/invest.
Southwest suburban Cook residents are encouraged to learn more about the Harlem Avenue Corridor plan. Its success depends on the contributions of those who know the subject best, the residents and businesses that travel Harlem Avenue every day.

Pace Routes
Pace Route 382 provides bus service within Bedford Park connecting riders to Midway Airport, businesses located in the Bedford Park Clearing Industrial District, Queen of Peace and St. Laurence High Schools and other Pace Bus and CTA routes including the Orange line. Selected trips serve Ford City Shopping Center. The regular fare is only $1.75 making this a great money saving option. In fact, the American Public Transportation Association recently analyzed the costs of commuting by car and found that those who use transit in Chicagoland saved an average of $942 monthly and annual savings of $11,298. Chicago offers the fourth-highest average savings for transit users, behind only New York, Boston, and San Francisco. The Transit Savings Report factors fuel prices, average parking fees and other costs for a two-person household and weighs those costs against the cost of a monthly transit pass to show the money saved by taking public transportation and living with one less car. The study serves as a reminder that using transit saves commuters money while helping to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion. Nationally, commuters save approximately $9,215 annually. For more information on Pace Route 382, visit the Pace website, www.pacebus.com. Bus passes can be purchased online or by mail with an order form obtained by calling Pace's Customer Relations Department at (847) 364-PACE (7223). Pace's TTY line for hearing impaired customers is (847) 364-5093. Public transit information is also available by calling the RTA Travel Information Center from any area code at 836-7000. The RTA's TTY number is (312) 836-4949.

Argo Community High School
Career Internship Program
The Goal of the Internship Program at Argo Community High School is to advance the academic, intellectual, technical and personal skills of career bound youth: students who plan to work,enter the military, attend a two year community college/technical college or enroll in a four-year college or university after high school graduation. High schools raise the achievement of these students by integrating high-level academic studies with work site learning.
Many high school programs cannot provide the in-depth career studies or modern technology and equipment to prepare students for today's workplace. A well-planned student internship experience can provide the academic, intellectual, technical, and personal skills of all school youth. Internships give students access to primary jobs. Internships may be offered in any career field, including manufacturing, banking and finance, graphic design, communications, construction and many others. The tentative start date for the Internship Program is September 2011. The students would leave the school at 1:00 p.m. and would be required to spend 2 hours at the worksite. Since the students are earning high school credit, the students will not be paid during this time.
A student intership experience improves the quality of school-based learning by:
- Introducint students to modern workplace equipment and actual workplace problems;
- Giving students access to jobs that require mor knowledge and skills than ordinary, entry-level jobs;
- Giving educators and employers an opportunity to work together in preparing students for success in the workplace;
- Allowing students to clarify career goals;
- Helping educators connect work site learning to school-based learning;
- Allowing students to experience a career field before graduation to make certain they really have an interest in this career;
- Demonstrating that high performance in high school "counts" in students' plans for the future;
- Creating opportunities for students to obtain good jobs and to continue their studies at work and/or post secondary education;
- Providing educators with valuable information on students' skills for use in revising the academic and technical curriculum and the overall program of study.

Know Your Neighbor:
Bell West Community Credit Union Celebrating 75 years of service in 2011!

As a new member of the BPCIA we would like to offer credit union membership to any business in the area by becoming a Select Employee Group of Bell West. A credit union is a full service financial cooperative formed by an organized group with a common bond. Bell West Community Credit Union was founded in 1936 by telephone company employees who we continue to serve today, almost 75 years later. In addition to over 55 select employee groups, anyone who lives or works in the following communities are eligible for membership: Bridgeview, Burbank, Chicago Ridge, Evergreen Park, Hickory Hills, Oak Lawn, Westchester and Willow Springs. Several of our Select Employee Groups are located in Bedford Park, one of which being the Belt Railway. You can find a list of those businesses on our website at www.bwccu.org. Any company or business can offer the free benefit of credit union membership to its employees by taking a few easy steps, contact us at 708-449-4800 or come to see us at 9930 Southwest Highway in Oak Lawn to get the ball rolling and make 2011 a great year for your employees!
Members of credit unions pool their assets to provide loans and other financial services to each other. These factors allow credit unions to offer lower loan rates, higher savings rates and fewer fees. Unused earnings are distributed to members (not shareholders) as dividends.
Our membership is comprised of select employee groups, residents and workers in eight local communities, and their family members. A credit union is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected by its membership. BWCCU provides savings and checking accounts, loans and a variety of products and services just as other financial institutions. Members own the credit union in the form of shares and each person must own at least one share to be a member. Eligible members join BWCCU when they open and deposit $50 in a regular share savings account. As long as you keep $50 in the regular share savings account you are a member-owner of BWCCU. Once becoming a member, you are always a member, no matter where you live or work as long as you maintain a $50 balance. And once a member your family members are also eligible for membership.
While focusing on member needs, credit unions work for the sustainable development of communities, including people of modest means, through policies developed and accepted by the members. As a member of the Oak Lawn and Bridgeview Chamber of Commerce and located in the community at 9930 Southwest Highway in Oak Lawn, employees partake in community orientated activities. In the past few years BWCCU has sponsored several free Shred Day events for the community, held a Bike Safety Fair with our partner Liberty Mutual Insurance, volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House affiliated with Christ Hospital, sponsored a baseball team and most recently, volunteered as a drop off site for the Bridgeview Chamber 21st Annual Food & Toy Drive.
Liberty Mutual Insurance offers reduced rates to credit union members in addition to any other discounts they might qualify for. Also, BWCCU has a special financing rate for cars purchased from Enterprise Car Sales.
