I had the opportunity back in January to visit El Salvador
and experience first hand how coffee is
grown, picked, fermented, & dried.......
November - February (which is their hot summer months) these pickers climb the mountain to your left and pick ripe coffee beans by hand, carrying back their 50-100 lb bags of beans on their backs down the mountain. They sit at the side of the road sorting the ripe red coffee beans from the unripe yellow. They wait to be picked up where their bags are then weighed, receiving only $8.00 per bag.

Santa Teresa Estate in El Salvador is more than a century old, and it is really "AN ACTIVE VOLCANO TURNED INTO A COFFEE ESTATE". Santa Teresa is probably the only coffee plantation in the world surrounded by Volcanic Geysers and Thermal Water Springs, it's 65 Hectareas are located in the Mountain Range between Antigua Guatemala and the Apaneca - Ilamatepec Volcanic Range of El Salvador and is only 1.5 Kilometers from the center of AHUACHAPAN, THE COFFEE CAPITAL OF EL SALVADOR.
Santa Teresa´s Organic + Rainforest Alliance Certified Bourbon and Pacamara coffee is grown at an altitude between 900 and 1,400 Meters Above Sea Level. The beans are all processed with warm mineral springs water (ONSEN) in the Santa Teresa Eco-friendly coffee mill that is the only mill in the world that uses Geothermal Energy and has won the 2003 National Environmental Award and the 2006 Central American Environmental Innovation Award. Marco Batres received the environmental awards for using Geothermal Energy to Pre-Dry the coffee and evaporate the industrial waters and for using Warm Mineral Water to De-pulp & wash the beans and for producing organic fertilizers.

The combination of ideal mountain climate, fertile volcanic soil and pure warm springs mineral water used to process the coffee gives Santa Teresa's coffee beans it's superb Specialty Coffee characteristics. In 2005 Santa Teresa PACAMARA won the 1ST Place in the National Contest of Rainforest Certified coffees. Santa Teresa Estate V (La Providencia) is also certified Smithsonian Foundation Birdfriendly.
