Issue: #3                                   September 2008
Greetings!

Welcome to Fall!  The summer heat seems to be breaking and football is all over the place.  Let's jump right in to the newsletter...
Life Insurance Awareness Month!
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month (just gives me goosebumps thinking about it). Ok, maybe not so much. But life insurance is something that most people need, but do not want to talk about.  Two things that surprise people the most when discussing life insurance are:

1) Term insurance can very inexpensive
2) The pricing can vary greatly depending on your health

Those two items led us to create a chart that shows sample premiums for term insurance for a 35 year old male for different health categories and different term lengths.  Addressing the two surprises mentioned above, the chart shows that a very healthy non-smoker can get $1,000,000 of term insurance with a guaranteed level premium for 10 years for $260/year (that addresses item 1 above).  If that same individual is a smoker, the rate increases to $1,240/year (that addresses item 2).  And don't think you can fool them into thinking you are a non-smoker because you can't.  So if you were looking for a reason to quit smoking...

See the chart here.
New HSA Website For Small Businesses
SBA logoThe U. S. Small Business Administration has launched a new website specific to HSA's.
If you have talked to us about HSA's, you know we like them.  While not for everyone (for a host of reasons), HSA's can be a
great health insurance option for employers and individuals.  The new SBA website has a good layout, is easy to navigate, and is easy to dance to (just making sure you are reading this).  It is not cluttered with stuff you don't want (like advertisements from insurance companies).

Contact us if you want to look at HSA's in more detail, or just want to have a conversation about them.

At the risk of stating the obvious, here is a comparison of health insurance premiums for 2000 and 2007...

health costs
Overheard...  $5.2 Billion In Artificial Knees!
overheard... There are a host of reasons why healthcare in America is expensive. One of the reasons that is often left out of the discussion (especially in the political arena) is the advancement of technology and how that has led to expensive treatments for things we used to 'live with'. The link below is an excerpt from a book I read recently.  It addresses this point and gives a vivid example of a 'cost' that is accepted today (dare I say, expected) that was not available a generation ago - thanks to advances in technology.  Read more.
The Lighter Side - "Tiger Can't Help Me"
Rick Reilly has been a sports writer for years with Sports Illustrated and also with ESPN The Magazine.  He has written some of the funniest stuff I have ever read (if you have ever read his article about the time he went up in a jet fighter, you know what I am talking about).  He recently played golf with Charles Barkley who has, to put it mildly, an unorthodox swing.  Take a look at the swing, then read the article.

Thanks for reading!  We encourage your feedback.  We want to make this something you will continue to read and look forward to receiving.

Have a great day!
