| Foundation Announces School Empowerment Grants!
We are very pleased to report that the foundation recently voted to offer School Empowerment Grants of up to $10,000 to each of the elementary schools this year. The schools will be invited to apply for grants to conduct large scale programs or projects at their schools.
- Each school will be asked to form a committee of administrators, teachers and parents to decide which project to submit to the foundation for consideration.
- Each school will be expected to solicit input from the entire school community
- The project must further the foundation's mission, to cultivate innovative learning opportunities that inspire and motivate Haverford Township students.
So put your thinking caps on and pass along your ideas to your school principal.

Mini-Grant of the Month - Manoa's Magic in Me
 | | The cast of Manoa Elementary's "Magic in Me" |
|
|
This past year, the foundation sponsored a mini-grant for Manoa Elementary School's production of Magic in Me , a musical with the message that we are all special and unique. The production, directed by Leighann Brienza, the director for the high school musical and drama productions, involved approximately fifty 4th and 5th grade students, numerous parents and several high school students who volunteered a lot of time to support the director and manage the sound and lighting. What better use of our supporters' dollars - a large number of students working together on a creative project for the entire school community with a message we all need to hear from time to time! | | Some Manoa "Magicians" |
|
2010-2011 Mini-Grants
This past year, we funded several mini-grants throughout the district:
Haverford Aware - Paid for supplies necessary to build birdhouses for placement through the Haverford Township community. The Club will follow up with periodic maintenance and will use the birdhouses to track usage of artificial habitats and diversity of species in the area for years to come. The club currently has 80 members.
Elementary School Musical - As noted above, we funded Manoa's Magic in Me production
Reading Olympics - Paid for books to help 4th and 5th graders prepare for the Delaware County Reading Olympics. The competition is a celebration of reading and allows participants to display their knowledge of popular books in a game show setting. There are currently 187 students in these grade levels.
Read 180 Audio Books - Funding for the purchase of iPod Nano's/mp3 players to begin replacing the CD players that are currently in use for the Read 180 program in use for Level 3 Language Arts. These would allow for greater ease of use since many books can be stored on each device. In the long term, the purchase of the new audio books for Nano's is also significantly cheaper than the CD Books. This project would serve 40 students per year.
Using Real Literature as Mentor Texts - Funding for the purchase of books to use in classroom libraries. The books will be used as "mentors" to help teach the traits and skills of writing to help the students become better writers. The program will be used throughout the 5th grade.
Accommodating Written Expression w/Speech & Text - Funding for the purchase of speech to text software to engage students with writing difficulties in supplemental learning support class. The software would allow students to capture their ideas quickly without being labored by writing or spelling.
Sensory Management - Funding to create a centralized sensory management lending library to maximize our ability to serve our special education and therapy students who experience sensory management needs. In addition, this library could be made available to regular education students through referral to the building's child study team so that students who are not currently receiving specialized services but whose learning might benefit from sensory supports could have access to sensory materials and/or strategy trials.
Literacy Centers-Interactive & Differentiated - Funding for materials for an interactive hands-on literacy center for the Kindergarten classrooms. This literacy center would be integrated into the current language arts program and used to motivate students to succeed.
Literacy Centers-Providing Hands on Learning Experiences - This project aims to engage students in motivating, interactive, and hands-on literacy center activities. Students will complete these activities during center time in both independent and teacher-guided small groups as an aid to acquiring important early literacy skills.
Using iPad to Improve Communication Skills - This proposal used the iPad and an available application to further the IEP goals for the students who receive Speech and Language Therapy from K-12. These goals may include articulating/producing sounds, building sentences, responding to "WH" questions (who , what, when , where, why), speaking for non-verbal students, practicing pragmatic language skills, increasing vocabulary knowledge and usage and communicating in community settings.
Bookband - This proposal would integrate music into the language arts curriculum with equipment to allow for the formation of music using garageband software and computers during a variety of planned lessons.

Foundation Honors Retiring Teachers
To date, the education foundation has placed nearly 100 new books into school district libraries through its program to honor district retirees by donating books chosen by them in their names. "All the teachers and employees seem to be very touched by this small, but meaningful gesture," Mary Beth Lauer said. "It has been a great joy to be part of the project since it began five years ago." Board members Lillian Mittleman and Board President Ellen Fisher assisted Mary Beth in presenting the books to retirees at end of the year assemblies at four elementary schools. Mary Beth also attended the end of the year luncheons for the middle and high school teachers. Here are this year's honorees, the books they chose and, for many, the reasons why they selected the books: Mark Lare selected A Secret Gift - How One Man's Kindness - and a Trove of Letters - Revealed the Hidden History of the Great Depression by Ted Gup because he it sounded inspiring and plans to he read it himself. Alicia Peterson picked The Greater Journey by David McCullough because it was about the importance of learning. Kathleen Manley, a Spanish teacher for many years, chose The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa, one of her favorite books by a Spanish author. Mitch Trembicki, an environmental science teacher, chose Going Blue: A Teen Guide to Saving Our Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, & Wetlands by Cathryn Berger Kaye . Ellen Jackson chose Kayaking and Canoeing. She and her husband were ardent canoers before they had children. Their son didn't like boats so they kind of gave it up, but she still has very fond memories of those experiences and wanted others to learn about the activity. William Sember's book is about tennis, reflecting his years as the tennis coach. Bun, Bun Button, Patricia Polacco's new book was Barbara Radcliffe's choice. The second grade does a "study" of Polacco's books and she thought it would be great for the school to have her latest work. She too loves Patricia Polacco. Chestnutwold librarian Jayne Dambman presented a copy of the book's cover to Radcliffe in her classroom. Her current second graders were very excited about the book. Carol Taylor, Chestnutwold's seminar teacher, chose a new book for young adults called Moon Over Manifest. Debbie Hayes always loved Dan Gutman's book Mrs. Leakey Is Freaky and she knew kids would love to have a copy in the library! Coopertown's fourth grade teacher Pat Dorff chose Turtle in Paradise. Chatham Park's retirees included long-time custodian Dennis Feeney, a golf enthusiast, chose For the Love of Golf. Instructional Aid Barbara Goodwin chose a favorite from her childhood, The Caboose is on the Loose by Bill Peet. Katherine Wells, a retiring English Language Learners teacher chose a book of animal sounds in all different languages called, Mung, Mung Mung-mung: A Foldout Book of Animal Sounds by Linda Sue Park. Thank you for all your years of service to the students of the district! |
The S. Virginia Murphy Fund for Special Needs Children
To honor the many years of work and devotion to her students by special education teacher S. Virginia Murphy, several donations have been made in her memory to the Foundation to fund the S. Virginia Murphy grant for special needs children. We have funded several mini-grants for special needs children with this fund whose coffers are now low. Donations to this fund would be greatly appreciated.

Staff Tribute Program
Each spring and fall, we invite contributions in honor of the district staff in recognition of their hard work and service to the students of the district. These contributions help fund the numerous mini-grants we have approved over the years. If there is a special teacher, bus driver, crossing guard or administrator who has made a difference in your child's school life, please consider making a donation to the foundation in their name. They will be informed of the gift and will be given a certificate recognizing the honor. To obtain the staff tribute form, please visit our website at http://www.haverfordedfoundation.org/howtohelp.html.
